^^^ That's why I keep my '99 Tahoe! It still runs great. It tows whatever I want. I can throw a deer in the back. 4wd works. And it costs me about $100 a year to keep it going.

I purchased this in Feburary. I'm very impressed with the quality, ride and power. In the end I paid less than 60k which is certainly a lot of $$$ for just about anyone other than the 1% but it was what I wanted and I had the ability to afford it so why not.

I don't really understand this. You don't have to beat a truck to death to be "using it as a truck." If you pull a 30 foot RV are you using it as a truck? What if I go get 2 yards of mulch?

If you had a Porsche would you run it fast? If you had a Wilson Combat 1911, would you shoot it?

It means that I wouldn't put a bale spike on it and drive it down some of our roads. I don't need anything fancy. I need something that'll do the job.

I sold my '95 1500 a few months ago, rust was eating it alive. Still ran great, debating taking the motor out and selling the roller. 210k miles.

Bought a '13 1500 a few weeks ago. Got an extended cab 8ft bed with 4wd and pretty much no other options. Previous owner put a few dings and scratches in it. Drives great, everything works, love the 8-foot ass when I get lumber at the hardware store and just toss it in and take off while everyone else is dealing with securing and flagging everything hanging out of the box.

No regrets buying it, but a 4-5 year old truck with 100k miles was still almost 20 grand. If they still sold stripper models with a stick for that much I would have got a new one, but sticker on this thing was somewhere between 35 and 40. For a basic 4wd, no-frills truck.

My Wife gets a new rental 3 and even 4 times a month...if she needs to travel at all for her job. So we get a new rental almost every week.

Most are boring, but occasionally she gets something fun, or of interest. The improvements made the past ten years or so years have been very impressive. Handling, braking and mileage have all improved.

It's tough to NOT find a vehicle anymore that isn't reliable, well appointed with decent handling and performance. Sure some of the low end models are not appointed as nice as the top of the line. But as an Official Old Guy....Cars today are all pretty damned amazing.

Nice! I bought the same thing two years ago, only in bright fire engine red. Since I'm an old fart, I decided I wanted something with all the creature features this time. When we go down the road my wife keeps pointing & saying, "Look. There's another old man in a big assed pickup. They're the only ones who can afford them."

Spending almost $30K on a 3 year old, 30,010 mile truck was hard enough for me... First vehicle I haven't bought outright for over $5000 since I started driving 13 years ago.

Best I have ever driven is one I still own - 1995 Dodge Ram 2500, diesel, manual, king cab, 8' bed 2WD.

Bought in '14 with 95k miles. Rides great, runs great, will carry almost 3k lbs in the bed. Strong engine, smooth running, roomy. Best highway was 25 mpg.

I pretty much live in a pick up as I drive one as my service vehicle. Been driving them for decades and have racked up over a million miles in them.

My current is a 2010 F150 with the 5.4L engine. Awesome truck. I've put about 55K miles on it since buying it in January of 2016. It's powerful, quiet and comfortable.

Used cars, even 1 year old cars, can be found at very reasonable prices. Not so for trucks. I want to buy a newer used truck, and avoid the depreciation, but higher interest rates, prices that rival a new vehicle and limited warranties sure sour me on even good newer used trucks.

Is the sky high prices on used pickups due to demand, or are the dealers wanting to steer the buyers to new trucks.

$26,000 for a 3 year old X Brand truck with 50,000 miles? Geesh

And that's the problem. You're stuck paying these absurd prices even if all you want is a bare bones, no frills "work truck."

Trucks nowadays have become luxury vehicles first and trucks second. Disgusting.

I hear what some of you are saying....as my $80K platinum diesel truck sits in the driveway.
I didn't pay quite that much (X-plan), but I paid a lot. In fact...I'm still paying for it, for another 18 months at this rate.

I'll say this. I've spent some serious time in it, and my time is worth...ugh, something. I routinely drive 1500 mile trips for it, and it's leased to my company. We've made more than $80k with it (that couldn't be made without it, or something similar to it) in the past 22 months since it was purchased.

I liken it to the cell phone argument....I could never justify a $800-1000 "smart" phone, if I wasn't using it for business. I make that much in increased business that I can conduct while mobile, every 2-3 months. Easily. If I wasn't...I really don't think could justify one of those phones. Same for my truck.

I had one job this spring that could not have been done without several key assets (one being my 4x4 diesel truck). The profit alone paid half the purchase alone for this truck. The profit, after expenses (including payroll).

I'm glad someone makes nice trucks. Should they not exist because they don't make a lot of sense to some people? Well if a sizeable portion of the population wasn't willing to shell out the $$$ they wouldn't exist. But they do, and its because there IS a market.

I'm glad you're happy. I'm pretty much the opposite of you on usage. My work truck spends a lot of time off-pavement, a lot of time around livestock (ever seen what a big cow can do to a fender just by backing into it?), and a fair amount of time heavily loaded. I don't take 1,500 mile trips in it, so I don't really care if it rides like a lumber wagon. It's a truck, after all.

This isn't a new argument. I remember my grandfather making the same argument in the mid-late '90's when he had to replace his '88 Dodge after a fire. I'm not arguing that there isn't a market or that the market should be changed to suit me. I just don't buy new trucks.

Certainly forced addition of safety equipment by the government has driven prices up, however, consumer demand for rear cameras, panoramic sunroofs, heated and AC seats, navigation, automatic cruise control, collision avoidance, blind spot monitors, crew cabs, premium sound systems, keyless ignitions, premium hand stitched leather, etc is a major contributor. Think about what a pickup truck was 25 years ago, and compare it to the 70K truck the OP is describing.

Are the financial gurus still recommending buying 2 year old vehicles to avoid the biggest hit on depreciation?

Sure you can blame newer technologies for the price hike, but the truth is the consumer is the one to blame. How many folks would be driving these things if they couldn't finance them for 8 years?? Rarely do I hear anyone at a negotiation talk final cost of the vehicle, its all about the monthly payment.

I daily a 2006 silverado 3LT Vortec I bought with 75000 miles a few years ago for $12K. When its time to go I plan to look for a similar deal. Trucks seem to last forever, I see no reason to ever buy new

Ford introduced the Limited Edition trucks not long ago as an upgrade to the Platinum edition, as if $60K wasn't enough for an F150

I understand the term "Limited" applies to the limited number of people that can afford one... Big Grin
