I just received a newsletter from the powers that be, at Our Little Airport (Orlando-Apopka, the airport code is X04). Evidently, the TSA has some concerns about flights heading for the Washington DC area.
quote:
From the newsletter:

if you become aware of flights departing X04 to the NCR (National Capitol Region), over the next couple of weeks, please contact the TSA MCO Coordination Center at 407-563-9884.

Thank you in advance to your diligence in keeping our airport and the national airspace safe.

V-Tail,

I'll bow out of this thread. Sorry I brought Politics into it.

Thank you

Got the notice last week... if you actually look at the full report... there was an area around DC airspace that if you ventured into it on the 20th the authorities were authorized to use deadly force.

Then again, what most folk don't know and I probably should not mention is what the secret service have on the roof of the white house.... every day.

The Washington DC Special Flight Rules Area has been in effect for 20 years or so, in its current form.

https://www.faa.gov/news/fact_...ry%20of%20the%20SFRA.

Violators of the airspace, which is a 30 nautical mile circle around DC, can expect to be hit with "highly concentrated" alternating red and green light, an armed escort, and the possibility of being downed, if they do not comply.

The FAA has online certification courses for flying in the airspace, and about half of it requires preauthorization by the TSA.

Instrument traffic on an instrument (IFR) flight plan may pass through and land, but any deviations will garner immediate attention. I passed through a day ago going into Dover AFB. Busy, but normal. Where it gets abnormal is any deviation from a clearance.

When suspected activity may occur, on occasion alerts may be given, such as what v-tail is describing, asking airport tenants to report anything unusual. I've had FBI and others visit the airfield to enquire or ask for reports of unusual, sometimes specific, activity, for the same reason.

In some sensitive areas, we used to be required to paint specific identification symbols on the aircraft to make rapid identification possible, to preclude an unfortunate case of mistaken identity.

Where was this surface to air protection on 9/11 if it exists?

There's no doubt the USSS has some form of MANPADS available at the White House, though I've never actually seen one in pictures/video. It's highly unlikely though, if downright impossible that they have some kind of SAM battery that's hidden or retractable into the roof as is commonly portrayed in movies and TV.

Even if they had full surface to air capability on 9/11 it's doubtful they would've been able to do anything about the airplane that hit the Pentagon, coming in fast and at low level. We do know that at some point after the initial attack on NYC fighter aircraft were given shoot down authorization, and it's highly likely that had UAL 93 not been been crashed after the heroic efforts of the pax it would've been shot down before reaching its target in DC which is assumed to be the White House or Capitol building.

Also don't forget there is 24 hour (I assume) armed CAP over DC. That would be the primary response to an airborne threat.

I believe I read that the first fighters to respond had no ammo. One pilot planned to crash into UA93 to take it down. Then the passengers did the job first.

I wouldn't be surprised if The White House had a CIWS system (autocannon integrated with missiles) similar to the Navy's integrated Phalanx + SeaRAM.

Most of the gov part of DC is a prohibited zone, meaning you can't fly into it now or never.

In a bit of irony, the exact location of Camp David used to be fairly secret. Unless you looked on a sectional chart and saw a little prohibited airspace circle in the middle of Maryland.
