Thanks to all for the congrats, well-wishes and kind words. Like many, I could have hung on for another year or two, but just felt that the timing was right. I really can’t say that I have ran across anyone who has said that they should have worked a few more years, when given the choice, but many acquaintances now look back and say they wish they would have retired earlier. The way I view it, within reason, I could have the opportunity to make a little more money later in life, if I want to return to the workforce part time. On the other hand, all the money in the world won’t buy more time, if I later look back and wish I would have done a few more things while I still have my health. All is well at this point, I’m just trying to learn from the advice of others who have traveled down this road a few years ahead of me.

Congratulations! Enjoy it--you have earned it. I retired twice: from USAF after 20 years (Captain O-3) and then from a large semiconductor manufacturer after 24 years (plus 2 more as a Consultant in the same office). I've been without a job now for 15 years and have been having a very good time. Lots of travel, involvement with several music groups (choral and handbells), on-line genealogy, some shooting, etc. Sounds as if you have activities lined up, too. flashguy Texan by choice, not accident of birth

Congratulations on retiring. I retired six weeks ago after 40 years at the same employer. I'm enjoying not doing the grind anymore. "If Gun Control worked, Chicago would look like Mayberry, not Thunderdome" - Cam Edwards

Congrats! You deserve it. One thing, though. Every day is NOT Saturday. On Saturday, the stores and restaurants are crowded, the kids are out of school, few of the working classes are working. I prefer to think of every day as Tuesday. If you avoid rush hours, nothing is crowded. Peace and tranquility reign. Enjoy your well earned leisure time! Been retired since the Spring of 2007. Went out at 59.5 years. Family and health are the two most important things in retirement. Everything else is just gravy. 100% correct. You can always make more money, but you can't make more time and there is no fountain of youth. One reason I was not a good corporate manager is that I insisted that the "youngsters" who worked for me went home at 5:00pm whenever possible. My motto was: No one ever dies wishing they'd spent more time in the office. _____________________________________________________________________ “One of the common failings among honorable people is a failure to appreciate how thoroughly dishonorable some other people can be, and how dangerous it is to trust them.” – Thomas Sowell

Thanks for the congrats. I see what you mean regarding Tuesdays, the gal who cuts my hair at the place up the street told me that Tuesday are the best day to get in without waiting. I'm still figuring this whole thing out, but it's been good so far.
