I retired a week ago with over 41 years with my employer, a long-established, privately-owned, US-based, global company. This company designs, builds and sells metal forming machines to users who produce components, such as fasteners and formed parts, as well as many other shapes of high-volume parts, which are used in the automotive, agricultural, commercial, consumer products, heavy truck, electronics, and ammunition sectors. I started working in Engineering and moved to sales about 15 years into my career, with the past 20 years in the role of a regional sales manager. About 50% of the time was spent traveling and visiting customers, mostly in the upper Midwest, mid-and-deep South, and a little international travel to Mexico and Europe. Our machine sales activity with major ammunition manufacturers and ammunition component-producing customers, primarily for forming shell cases, has really increased in the past 10 or so years, and I have had the good fortune of visiting and participating in capital acquisition projects with most of the major ammunition producers in North America, as well as attending and participating in SHOT and IWA. Having a little insight regarding activities and projects with these manufacturers was interesting, to say the least, and it appears that most producers stay tight-lipped when it comes to their own manufacturing processes. Also, it is worthwhile to note that there has been a considerable capex investment for component production expansion, and overall production volume increases in general, with most of the manufacturers in the past few years, which could eventually ease the availability issues. I am now looking forward to catching up on long-neglected projects, such as restorations/build for several older cars/parts cars which I have collected over the past 30 years, finishing the wood shop and garage, pursuing other hobbies, getting back to spending time at the range at the family farm, helping our kids with repairs around their houses, and just having the chance to jump on spur-of-the-moment activities for a day or a weekend. While I will miss the interaction with the ammunition manufacturing customers, I have come to the realization that life goes on and changes are inevitable. The upside is that now every day is Saturday.

Doing what I want, When I want, If I want! |
Congrats! I had 38 years in with one company when I took early retirement at 57 years of age. Folks told me to hold out for the two more years, but I’d had it with my boss. We were all senior level folks on my team but he treated us like kindergarteners. My whole career was in IT. ******************************************** "On the other side of fear you will always find freedom"

Thanks for posting your story and insights. Congratulations & enjoy your retirement! "Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." -- Justice Janice Rogers Brown "The United States government is the largest criminal enterprise on earth." -rduckwor

Comic Relief |
I am retired. I can usually name the month and the day of the week, but it's becoming harder, because I don't need to know nor do I care what they are. Friday is garbage day and some stores are closed on Sunday. I call always look at my smartphone. I would probably fail the "What is today's date?" test for mental acuity at a hospital.
