Wow, and I thought my neighbor was bad. All he does is tell the same old stories and won’t stop talking. He’s not crazy but he drives me crazy.

My neighbor was sitting inebriated on my door step at 10pm two nights ago with a 4 month old Australian Shepherd puppy that she said was driving her nuts. Supposedly, her house is sold and she's moving, so I think we dodged a bullet there.

If he still has that Ferrari discuss with him seriously about the light killing power of Italian automobiles and offer to get rid of it for him and at low cost to him at that, because, you know, he's getting the friends rate.

Well, ya know what? None of my so-called sane neighbors ever knocked on my door just to talk. Maybe you’re onto something.

He'll check in with you in a couple of years and just *think* it's been a couple of days.

Setting aside the part where your neighbor is crazy, I'm surprised you've never had each other's phone numbers. My wife and I have always sought to get to know our immediate neighbors at a minimum. Bonus points if we go farther; one neighbor used to pay for boxing PPVs and would always invite us and his other friends. And he would also have a feast each time.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

I'll reiterate that crazy can be dangerous. I would maintain my status as 'friend' while disengaging. The size of the guy isn't going to matter when he decides you actually are an 'eater of the light'.

I pretty much did disengage. No promises, no commitments, no invitations to return. However, I’m not going to fear the guy. If he checks in, I’ll met with him at the edge of the property to establish better boundaries.

My Department had multiple frequent flyer types that were mentally ill. One had a car and we would get calls from police all over the country asking us if we had dealt with him and was he dangerous? Our answer was "he can be if agitated and please keep him"! He always came back to us. Unfortunately for me, my home was between where a lot of our nuts lived and where a big shopping complex was that attracted them. So I would often see them strolling by. One of the nuts we were trying to jail long term would beat his mother to the point of being her being hospitalized. She absolutely refused help or any prosecution efforts. One fine day, I saw him sitting in the middle of my driveway, drinking a beer. I went and got my 870 and introduced him to it. He left quickly. He was crazy, not stupid!
