Washing machine crashed. Based on what I’ve read on this forum, analog controlled top loaders seem to have a good reputation. I’ve seen Speed Queen mentioned as a good choice. Does anyone know a SQ model# for a 2 person household?

Other reccommendations?
Analog models seem to pop up as good choices as computer boards tend to be prone to burn out.

Any advice appreciated.

I replaced my GE Profile washer with a Speed Queen a couple years ago and there’s no comparison. The Speed Queen in 10 x the machine.

There are about a thousand threads on this subject on this forum.

SF advice is uniform and unchanging. Buy only a Speed Queen, and only the ancient technology versions with real analog bits and NO bytes.

If you can't find a SQ old version, buy the version with "new" stuff. They work fine, as my wife will attest.

I'm happy with my Maytag Commerical Grade Residential Washer. Full tub of water, gets things clean, no touchpad (only knobs no display). Only problem is it won't wash anything over a queen comforter and sometimes needs to be restarted on super thick queen one.

I thought that SQ outsourced the manufacturing for washer's and dryer's and the quality of these products turned to crapola?

I don’t know where you heard that. They’re still made in Wisconsin.

Do a little research. SQ changed the way they agitated the clothes and that turned out to be a disaster. Not sure the latest redesign has solved the problem.
We liked the way Maytag made the clothes circulate top to bottom exposing each item to the agitator.
You might enjoy watching a few reviews on YouTube. They sealed the deal for us. YMMV

It has. With the TC5 SQ went back to the same 210 degree agitation they’ve had for years and years.

Yep. SQ brought back Coke Classic by popular demand. You can get both the 210° agitator, or the new one with the fixed agitator.

We just bought a newish house that came with some fancy LG front loaders. They look expensive. It took my wife about two days before she wanted our top loading SQ set out of storage. The LG washers are now sitting in the garage waiting to be sold. Those older Speed Queens don’t look fancy, but my oh my how they do their job well.

A speed queen simply isn't big enough for my tastes. I think the largest they make is 3.5 cu foot.

I have a 4.8 cu foot Whirlpool cabrio's for 5 years now that see a lot of use. It's been a very good washer and does a great job at cleaning. My older Whirlpool duets were even better and did an amazing job cleaning, I used them 2010-2014 and then left them at a 4 plex I own and I just replaced the washer this year after 9 years of tough life because the door locking mechanism latch broke off in the door and I didn't have time to deal with it.

Wife and I have never bought new. The current is a gas Tromm set, with pedestals, about 3 years old. We're paid $700 for the set.

Oh and my wife is really happy with the set. Wink

The trouble with these types of threads is everyones experience differs. I just replaced a 10 year old set of top end Maytag front loaders that have been problematic for the last 5 years. I replaced control boards in each unit once and the dryer was crapping out again. With just my wife and I at home, usage has always been minimal.

The 20 year old Maytag set that we gave our daughter, when we bought the last set, still work perfectly. They have 2 kids.

We replaced the Maytag set with LG front loaders that Costco had at a $1,100 discount. These were the #1 Consumer Reports set. So far - 5 months - my wife loves them. Plus they give you notices on our iPhones. How do you beat that.

It’s a crap shoot.

Thank you for the information PS!

I have been nursing along a ~21 year old Kenmore Series 90 washer (with matching dryer) with a series of low $ repairs, but I think when the next breakdown occurs I will finally toss them out to the curb and pick up a SQ set.

We bought the Speed Queen pair three years ago before the new models that didn't work so well came out. The washer cleans very well and has aggressive agitation so you don't have to run the wash cycle too long for normal clothes. The spin out speed is somewhat low so things like blue jeans come out pretty damp and take a lot of drying. The dryer does not sense dryness so you have to accurately estimate the drying time setting to not over dry or under dry the clothes. Neither the washer or dryer have an audible sound when the cycle is done. In three years we haven't had any mechanical problems. The machines are pretty expensive so they had better last a long time.

Gene,

Based on your experience thus far with the SQ set that you purchased, would you recommend the purchase or perhaps something else that you were considering (and why)?

I don't need bells and whistles, just clean / well washed clothes (from a machine that has an agitator) and reliability (which is generally not what it it used to be).

Thank you.

Not to step on your question. But, in my line of work I have used every type of washer imaginable from very expensive Miele units to Speed Queen. NOTHING has cleaned clothes as well as the Whirlpool front loaders I had. I do mechanical work on yachts, in engine rooms and get all kinds of grease and oil on my clothes and they did an incredible job at cleaning without beating the clothes up.

Those front loaders aren’t going to last as long as an SQ. My sister’s 7 year old front load Whirlpool just shit the bed last year. What did she buy to replace it? SQ.
