The pool play is finished. It’s time for the knockout stage.

No more ties. Now it’s extra time and then penalty kicks.

GO USA!!!

Germany and the Netherlands both knocked out today in penalty shootouts.

Big upsets…

They were both definitely upsetting for me. Germany was one of my backups to USA (with Norway) and Netherlands was my wife’s work pool team. Fun games at least. I’ve never really dedicated much time to watching soccer until this WC, but these guys are pretty tough minus the usual flop. Some dude from Netherlands took a cleat to the head, bled a bunch and got stapled up on the field and kept going. Saw quite a few guys bleed actually so far and just keep going. Good stuff.

...Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, was just a freight train coming your way...

Wild day. I got pulled heavily into the World Cup in 2014 by a friend, followed the tournament and watched 20 or so of the games.

The idea at the time was the U.S. wasn't likely to go that far so you adopted another team to follow. My buddy was rooting for the Netherlands and I was rooting for Germany. The Netherlands got 3rd that year and Germany won the whole thing. Germany knocked Brazil (game played in Brazil) out of the semi-final with a score of 7-1, and then beat Argentina in the final. For Germany to just decimate and embarrass powerhouse Brazil to getting beat by Paraguay today. a country 1/12th the size of Germany is an amazing fall.

For both teams to get knocked out today is wild to me.

The US 4-1 win over Paraguay in the group stage looks a little more impressive today.

Bummed about Japan, was looking for them to advance.

Some big drama with shoot outs yesterday, we are definitely in the knock out stage.

Could be worse... at least Germany made it into the WC, consider Italy has missed the last 3 tournaments

My favorite team, outside USA, is Sweden and they lost big time to France. Oh well, still have our guys in there going for the prize.

It's as gritty as i've ever seen them play.
I'll be in Seattle next week but I cannot stomach the cost of the tickets, so I guess I'll just be along for the ride. Gonna be fun.

That was a gritty game! $3,100 cheapest ticket on SeatGeek for Monday's game, too steep for me.

Great win.

I felt the Ref did a terrible job. Straight red for our top scorer and no yellow cards for Bosnia pulling on our jerseys. That’s supposed to be a yellow card.

So you know, FIFA controls the price for the tickets.

GO USA!!!

The red card was total bullshit but the better team won!!!!

I wonder if any Italians are happy to see the team that kept them out of the World Cup just lost? I was sad to see Italy absent.

The ref from yesterday’s US game has been under investigation for issues in the past? WTF.

What’s more corrupt the IOC or FIFA ?

Welcome to the world of international soccer. Referees’ decisions are just as much a part of it as Maradonnas “Hand of God” and Germany’s disallowed goal. 1.5 billion soccer experts worldwide can attest to that.

And of course, everyone is corrupt anyway if they don’t make decisions in their own best interest as we know from pop culture politics.

There’s only one rule as Sepp Herberger stated: “The round thing has to go into the square one” —everything else is just theater.
