My deepest respect for veterans and 'thank you for your service' doesn't come close to my respect.

but in case it goes to our heads, Mr. Kipling sends regards:

I went into a public-'ouse to get a pint o' beer,
The publican 'e up an' sez, "We serve no red-coats here."
The girls be'ind the bar they laughed an' giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I:

O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";
But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play.

Had a great time with V-Tail and wife (rear left) today! I took my son and a friend from the army (front right, Luis) and another friend from the Navy (front left, Mike).

So we had Marines, Army and Navy at the table. I invited an Air Force guy, but he wasn't able to make it, as well as ArtieS (Army), but we'll try again sometime.

Veterans Day, originally called Armistice Day, originated as a result of the end of World War I. The war ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.

My father, who passed early last year at 105 years, was born 3 days after the end of that war. He lived through the depression. I understand he hopped trains out to the west coast to pick crops before returning to the mid-west and working on a farm in southern Minnesota at least through the 1940 Census. When World War II started, he made his way back to Nebraska to enlist. That state had already filled the quota of enlistees and wanted him to take the farmer's exemption. Dad declined - he didn't own land and didn't want to spend his life on a farm. He and a cousin were able to make their way back to Minnesota and enlisted there.

Dad served as a waist gunner on a B-24 out of England for 32 missions over Europe. He actually was in the plane when it crashed in England on return from a mission. He met Mom in England and went back after the war to marry her. He was asked to re-enlist during Korea (he had been out long enough that they couldn't order him active). He did so but didn't have to go overseas for that one. He eventually retired with over 20 years of service during Vietnam - he got as close as Okinawa on that one.

After Mom passed in 2012, Dad and I went to several WWII 8th Air Force Historical Society reunions. We even went (with another group) to England in 2014 and toured the area where had flown. We met TacFoley during that trip and had dinner with him and his wife.

Dad drove until 101 years old - he had to go bowling and I wasn't retired yet. As it was, the pandemic set in and that was when he helped make the decision to stop driving. One of our local TV stations had a story on him - the bowling veteran.

Dad and Mom, we miss you. I'm hoping you're able to talk with Tac and compare notes. I'm also hoping he has made contact with others with whom he served.
