I think my very-short-term plan, in that situation, would be to have someone take me (in their car) to the DMV and get some new plates issued for my own car. Politicians seem to have forgotten that they work for us, not the other way around. — — — — — — — — — — — — God bless America.

Funny you should say that, when my renewal came up this month I elected to change the plate to a different type, not because of Flock, but wanted a black plate to match up with the area of the new car, even though my truck was also black. However, now Flock's capture of the old plate doesn't mean diddly squat. Think I'll change plate type at every renewal now.... LOL

Had a department meeting last night, Chief asked if we thought the Flock cameras were worth what it costs the city. We decided to not renew the contract when it expires. Nice tool to have, but with the public outcry, expense and our small community the decision to let it go was the right one.

Good job, hope more cities dump these things, there are a lot more scan tools on vehicles out there. One day someone will take all the data from different suppliers, combine it and sell access to insurance companies, police forces, all kinds of marketing. Right now when you pull into a service lane, almost all dealers are using photo imaging systems and they have you drive through, it records the whole car, plate and vin associated. Mainly for protection from scammers about vehicle damage claims of scratches, dents, there are a lot of false claims from people who try and get dealers to pay for damages they had, now, that scam is abated. But think about the value of the data to all insurance companies. They could theoretically sell that image access to an insurance adjuster who could look at your car from dealer scans, then compare with Flock cameras, see if you really were in an accident to deny or accept your claim. So for FLOCK to say it's "law enforcement only" is disingenuous, because they know the real money is in outside LEO data sales. But back to the 4th amendment argument, no warrant, no observation should be happening. Just because I'm in the public doesn't mean I agree to be tracked and data sold about my movements when I'm not a criminal. Now if the cameras were used where law enforcement needed a warrant, then submitted a copy into FLOCK with the plate number they are looking for, and, then the system started scanning for that plate, and recorded THAT plates movements only, per the warrant, the yes it has value.

My disdain for these are the same as I have for DUI checkpoint. The argument for the greater good fails when you are imposing on the public. Local county PD set up such a checkpoint in the middle of the day at the intersection by my house. DUI? or just fishing because it was literally the middle of the day. While we may not have right to privacy in public, we do have the right to our constitutional rights in unwarranted searches which occurs with these. It's bullshit and you know it. I know law enforcement has a tough job but this ain't it.

There is no downside to the removal and elimination with prejudice these cameras. Who ever said we don’t have a right to privacy in public never asked the public

Maybe you know this, who paid for/owns the cameras? Your town or Flock? When you don't renew with Flock, will the camera's come down, or will they still be there, but your dept just won't have access to Flock data? Darn right.
Nicely stated, sir. Politicians seem to have forgotten that they work for us, not the other way around. — — — — — — — — — — — — God bless America.

Grok says that both generally occur. When a contract is not renewed the cameras are removed and the police no longer have access to the data, depending on contractual language. "The Truth, when first uttered, is always considered heresy."

We lease the cameras, and our access will end when the lease is up, good questions as one would assume they would take them down. Will try and remember to find out once it expires. Flock has become a catch all reference. Coming soon to a firearms forum near you: what load is best for Flock cameras? Circa 2022 or '23, I had to ditch my old license plate and replace it with one with bolder white lettering/numbering on a dark blue background, which is much more reflective than the old one. (Fee that year was discounted to $5.) Is the reason for this added reflectivity to work better with cameras?
