Yeah, that is how I see it as well. The shooter never really left the area. Dazed and disorientated, he gets near the door, sees his attacker getting ready to attack again and fires away to save his life.

At least that is how his lawyer should present it. Too bad this is Chicago.

They always seem to attack the small of stature, female or old folks. The puncher doesn't look like no high skilled hitter. Actually kind of soft and mushy. Looks like he may have caught about 3 rounds. Moral: God created all men. Sam Colt made them equal.

Since the guy appears to be punching people unprovoked, the shooter could claim defense of others since there were plenty of other potential victims close by. The victim of the punch had a good demonstration of his intentions and capability.
Not saying that's a great idea but could be a defense, maybe his only one.
In any case, I doubt many will miss him.
