Obituary information for Armond Pagliai Sr.

Armond Pagliai Sr., 92, of Iowa City, passed away Sunday, July 13, 2025, after a lifetime of dedication to his family.

His work ethic was unyielding, and his motto was to treat every pizza like a work of art made with care and consistency and treat the customer as you would want to be treated.

He was grateful he had crossed so many people's paths in his years in business and made some great friends and loyal customers, whom he enjoyed until his last days.

He served them all equally and kindly, regardless of their importance. Pagliai's Pizza was a melting pot of cultures, social structures and personalities.

Armond Sr. naturally and intuitively made it happen in his no-sugar-coated way; he made pizzas for the masses and loved them.

At one time he had 30 pizza places.

Looks like one near me in DeKalb closed recently. I never heard of it, sad to say.

Never heard of them/him. Sounds like he made good pizza, though.

I used to frequent a Pagliai's pizza place in Urbana, Il a long time ago. I don't know if it was one of his resaurants or related in any way. Great pizza.

Great pizza! Haven't been for a while but it is always on the possible place to eat list when I go to Iowa City. Just somewhat out of the way for me.

I used to play hoops at the University of Iowa field house in the 70's.
Three games of five on five to 15.

Then Off to the Pizza Palace for half a pizza and a coke or three.

Probably 35 pies in five years.

I never met the man in the obituary, formally.

But saw him on numerous occasions. No matter who was making those pizza's back then,

They were extremely consistent with flavor and taste. Many fond memories.

Once upon a time I ate them weekly, minimum. It’s been awhile though.
