Doing what I want, When I want, If I want! |
Hello folks, I've been holding off on saying anything until thigs were more firmed up, so here goes.... The wife and I are closing on a construction loan for a new house in Tennessee next week! We bought the land 2 years ago (9.3 acres, 1 in timber) and have been working on design and finances. Building a 1900+ ranch with 3 car garage and walkout basement. It's about 20 miles south west of Clarksville. And best of all, it'll be out of Illinois! Current estimate is 12 to 13 months to build. Garage doors, doors, and windows are taking 6 months to get! Wish us luck! ******************************************** "On the other side of fear you will always find freedom"

Good luck. My wife and I own 3.5 acres on the side of a mountain in north eastern Tennessee. We have a few more years here in Florida before we can even think of moving. We are kind of in the same boat as you needing to some day build a home on it. Congratulations. The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. Mrs DF and I are doing the same thing. We bought land with 14 acres of pasture and the rest in timber. A small spring and creek runs through the pasture to where I'll build a pond and then off the property. We learned it's difficult to get anyone to show up to get anything built/excavated unless we are actually there. So we bought another smaller property with a house where we can stay until our permanent residence and shop/barn are built. We're hoping to be done with the move this year. Fingers crossed. We'll be in North Eastern Tennessee near Norris Lake. Looking to build something like this. Sorry about the image size. My host site is not working right now. Congratulations. Research your contractor well if you aren't doing it yourself. Years ago, ours got himself overextended on his time. My build got delayed because of it. When they're not the one holding the note it's hard to incentivize them. It was not an experience I enjoyed.

Here I was thinking this was about road construction on the Nashville interstates. Been going on at least 50 years. Tennessee will be a great change for you!

Here's a pic of the land. More to the left and right of the picture. The picture should be close to looking out the back windows of the house. It goes as far as the timber in the back of the photo. The closest town is Erin, 6+ miles. We have public water (Erin) and electricity at the road. We'll have to install a septic system. We're used to that. We are not doing general. Too far away and don't know enough sub-contractors. An appraisal was just done with land and house plans and it came in $100,000+ over our cost. ******************************************** "On the other side of fear you will always find freedom"

Congratulations on your move from IL to rural TN and the excitement of building your new home! 23 years ago I did about the same, not across State line but from suburb to undeveloped rural property. There can be many fun challenges beyond even the house and garage design, first and not the least of which is where to site the house and which way to orient it. I hope you keep us posted on your progress. No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

Congratulations! "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Grew up on the other side of Kentucky Lake in Paris. You're gonna love the area. I can't wait to retire back there. If you do your shopping across the border in Kentucky you'll dodge the state sales tax.
