The Brother HL-L2405W has served me well for the low volume use in my home. It's about $139 regular price at Offce Depot. Watch the sales and it drops to around $100.

Hard to go wrong with a Brother. Check their website for re-furbs directly from Brother; save some $$ without giving up any quality.

When you say ink, I am not sure if you want to stick with ink so my suggestion may not fit. Also you said BASIC, and this is a 3 in 1 device so again may not fit. The option to scan or copy is good. Just trying to offer a suggestion.

My mom needed a new printer, she had a color ink printer, wanted only black and white for your same purpose, and decided she wanted laser to save money on ink. She originally did not want scanner, but now is scanning in receipts to have a digital copy and loves it.

I found and bought her this black and white laser printer for $215. It is a scanner, copier, and printer. It is a Canon® imageCLASS® MF273dw Wireless Duplex Laser All-in-One Monochrome Printer. Office Depot is the LINK I found it at but they said it was a several week delivery as it was a discontinued product. I found one in-stock at a local Best Buy and they do price matching so I went and got it for the Office Depot price. So far my mom loves it.

I have that epson ink bottle printer. Those bottles are cheap, there is no cartridge and I use aftermarket non epson ink which is even cheaper. Cartridges of any kind are a scam. Ink bottles are the way to go.

I just looked it up. 5 bottles, 20 bucks. The bottles last a long time. Don’t know if they make a b/w only model because who gives a shit if adding color is still way cheaper? 90% of what I print is b/w so the color stuff just lasts forever.

The cheapest Amazon printer that uses it is 159. Your cheap and my cheap may/may not be the same.

Ditch cartridges though.

Based on the quality and performance of my Epson Ecotank all-in-one, I can recommend this brand. They do make B&W-only printers as well. Selection The cost may seem expensive, but this is no worse than 6-8 cartridges. A large black ink bottle runs about $17, which would last for a long time printing just B&W text.

I've had a Canon B&W laser printer that looks very similar to this. Duplex printing. Regular laser cartridges last a long time but we don't do a lot of printing.

Another Brother recommendation - We have an older MFP and it has been flawless - and wireless printing from phones is cool - Replacement factory Brother laser cartridge is $98 bucks for 3000 pages - worth the money

I have a Brother laser jet. Model MFC7360N. Probably obsolete now. Takes a new toner cartridge to get it running again for a freaking long time. Like 10000 pages. I've connected this thing to three different desk tops. So maybe 15 or 16 years old. I had a little trouble locating a driver when I got my newest computer and might have been a little finicky about Windows 11. Once I got it going it still works great.

I've disposed of a bunch of others that broke down in different ways.

Love my little Brother cheap laser printer with Bluetooth. Just do a search for the secret way to turn off “deep-sleep” mode. Only trouble I ever had with it was waking it up a few times: but you can disable it.

Cheap brother laser from walmart, I think mine was $80. The toner lasted 5+ years & I bought off-brand I think it was 2 for 40ish, don't remember.
Also has document feeder for scanner & 2-sided printing, which is great for $80

The drivers have had issues a few times, but I think that's a windows thing. Remove & reinstall (print driver, not windows) works to get it back & only takes a few minutes.

I'm putting off buying a color inkjet, but it will be an Epson Ecotank once the wife wins.

Buy a Brother, brother. Get one that prints one both sides to save paper (duplex). Color laser printers IMO don't do that great--the Brother color laser printer I still have but doesn't work with the current MacOS (another story) never printed out anything like color print quality for photos. For that you need something like the Epson Color Tank printer.

I’ll just say this.. Cannon’s customer service is USA based. That’s becoming a deciding factor more and more these days. I pull my hair out when I get an Indian person named David on the line.
