I've testified as an "expert" on several subjects, although I'm far from some world-renowned award-winning subject matter expert with multiple PhDs in that field... I just know more than the average bear.

I think I've told this story here before, but...

Many moons ago I worked for an employer who engaged in, let us just say "less than ethical business practices." (That was one of the reasons I'd left.)
Two or three years after I'd moved on I was subpoenaed to testify at a deposition. Knowing what I knew I hired my own lawyer. At a pre-deposition meeting he informed me of the difference between what I knew and what I merely thought I knew, and cautioned me not to embellish. Answer precisely what was asked. No more. No less.

The deposition was a fascinating experience. Bottom line: They did not get out of me what they were seeking--all because they mostly didn't ask quite the right questions. And, even when they otherwise did, they used the wrong technical terminology.

When it was over I told my lawyer "These guys should hire me as a consultant for future such cases. I would never have let them make those mistakes. I would've had me dead to rights."

And my old employer would've been toast.

I did not know that, and I suspect that’s true of most people—which makes you an expert on expert witnesses. Wink

Thanks.

True, but I'm thinking of a more specific answer. Want to try again?

Yes, I had a family member that, by the sound of it, knew something about everything. No matter the topic he had something to add that was “important”.

When his knowledge was put to the test it was easy to see he was on pretty shaky ground. He may have been good in his career field, but anything else was BS.

I think the response went something like this “You are not the expert you think you are and you are annoying those of us that are”

You can't truly call yourself "peaceful" unless you are capable of great violence. If you're not capable of great violence, you're not peaceful, you're harmless.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly.
