Exactly. Built-in navigation is old tech. Phone-based navigation has taken over for 99.9% of drivers.

99.9%? I don’t believe it. My current car, and my previous two cars had google maps navigation systems. Just excellent. I use the built-in navigation systems exclusively, and frequently.

2023 A5 Sportback here. I never bothered to try the navigation, just use Apple Car Play and that was a must-have during the test drive. We synch'ed up my phone then. It can be spotty and Audis have their electro-gremlins. But I'd never pay for a subscription when Apple Car Play is free.

I’ve never paid a cent for a subscription for a built-in navigation system on my current and previous two cars. They came with the car. No subscription needed.

Furthermore, the navigation system map on my current car is continually updated via satellite. It’s a Genesis G70.

Bought my wife a Q5 about a year ago, and I think it’s a 2023. I can look and see what it has, but we’ve never even looked for or tried a “Nav” button. As others have said, Apple CarPlay is there, and Google Maps or Waze are far superior to factory Navs.

I’ll look sometime this morning.

I’ve been in the car stereo business for 40 years. Very early adopter of Nav. Haven’t sold a navigation unit in probably 5 years or more. Smart phone and CarPlay or AndroidAuto are the way to go.

I would use car play with Maps. I like it better than the Audi Nav. I just wish I could program the nav button on my steering wheel to go to the android maps instead of launching the audi nav.

I love my Q5.

I use it, almost every time I drive.

The nav system in my vehicle is powered by Google. It uses Google Maps, updated in real time, constant traffic updates. I have used maybe half dozen built-in nav systems in different vehicles, and this one is by far, the best that I have used. I do have Apple Car Play, but the built-in system is much better than any iOS app that I have found.

The only thing that I can think of that would make it better would be a HUD, but that wasn't offered in the vehicle that I chose.

Many mfr’s are doing this now. The in-dash navigation, the old school type, is now behind a fucking pay wall. My Yota I bought last year, you have to subscribe to their “updates” and such. If you choose no data sharing/collecting, then the factory nav is locked out. It’s a performance car so why on Earth would I want Yota collecting my driving data when I’m out in the country railing turns and doing felony speeds?
They can eat a bag of dicks. Like I did in my truck, I’ll yank the factory head unit out in due time and go aftermarket with a full sound system. I prefer Apple CarPlay anyways, like many of us.

These greedy ass mfr’s are trying to go to the subscription based model for anything they can. BMW tried to do it with their heated seats Roll Eyes

Exactly the same for my Genesis G70 on all points. No subscription or fees of any sort.

Genesis gives you three years when you buy it. By the way over the air updates are included. It is an option on the sticker and yes it is factored into the sticker price. Paying less than sticker may provide the impression you got something for free but it was included.

That premium nav with a 14.5 inch screen is usually listed, by the way I thought big screens were stupid but I love the big screen.

In my opinion, Audi's multimedia interface (MMI) is the weakest part of the car. But as others have stated, the built-in navigation app is unnecessary if you have an Apple or Android phone. I have two Volkswagen-Audi Group vehicles and have paid to use to the navigation app. It's not good enough to replace my iPhone's Map app.

Audi’s MMI sucks.

1 you actually connect to their server and if their server goes down so do you. I think it’s been better over the past year 18 months

2 you can reboot your mmi in the service menu. There are you tube videos that will show you how to reset it

Yup, hold two fingers in the upper right hand corner of the touch screen gets you into "Engineering Mode" where you can reset the system. I've had two do that twice during five months of ownership of a 2024. Exceptionally annoying.

While we're talking newer Audis, I hate the Pre-Sense warning with a raging passion. I have twice almost been hit while making a left turn because the car "thought" it wasn't safe and then braked in the middle of my turn. I can turn it off on the Driver Assist screen. But it only stays off until the next start. I want it permanently removed. How to do this? Gawd, I hate having a computer overrule my driving decisions.

Every time I leave my minimally sloped driveway, my car gives me a pre-sense warning. Thankfully I have not gotten one mid-turn with traffic. Eek

After skins' new car thread and Rick's added info in that thread, I was seriously going to look at Audis. Now I'm really not sure.

Just ask the salesman if the Pre-Sense can be shut off. My car was a courtesy loaner, so it's not crazy to think they wanted that feature turned on then. But I want it shut off. Hell, I'm going to find and pull the fuse for the seatbelt warning noise, as I don't need to hear it between stopping at my mailbox and pulling into my garage.

The Audi presence can be turned off but you can also decrease the sensitivity. Mine is low and almost never goes off.

Use your googler
