New Jersey Democrat Sen. Bob Menendez and his wife have been indicted in New York on federal bribery charges, according to news reports Friday morning.

Menendez is the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

The senator and his wife, Nadine, are charged with three counts: conspiracy to commit bribery, conspiracy to commit honest services fraud, and conspiracy to commit extortion under color of official right, according to CNBC.com.

The charges are allegedly in connection with three businessmen in their state – Wael Hana, Jose Uribe and Fred Daibes. They are charged with the first two of the three criminal counts the Menendezs face.

Menendez is up for reelection in 2024 and has denied the charges.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan has scheduled a press conference for 11 a.m. ET to provide details about the indictment, CNBC.com also reports.

This is the second time the Justice Department has filed corruption charges against Menendez, the first coming in 2015.

I wonder who he pissed off.

Considering all the corruption in NJ no less, there is something else going on.

He beat corruption charges a few years back. Me thinks this DOJ picked an easy target they could get to show they are being even handed and if he goes down no big whoop, NJ will just replace him with another D senator. Simultaneously taking some heat off dementia Joe.

You nailed it. The sacrificial lamb after Garland's disastrous testimony in front of Congress.

That's my thought as well.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." This actually sheds further bad light on the DOJ/Garland.

Most all senators come into office already rich. Almost none become millionaires on a Senator's salary once in office.

Two that have done that come to mind: Menendez and Biden.

Biden hasn’t been a Senator for 14 years.

Out of the last 53 years, Joe Biden has been in public office for all but four of them.

Menendez is up for reelection next year. If they don't replace him and he stays on the D ballot, maybe we can replace him with an R. Yeah it's a long shot, but it's a shot. I hope the Rs run somebody who can win in NJ. No, that wouldn't be a Matt Gaetz clone, but if the Rs win and we can flip the Senate, that would be a huge deal. R's would get subpoena power, can pass legislation that is positive etc. New Jersey does have three Republican congressmen and the R candidate almost won the last governor's race.

R's cant win in NJ. The election shenanigans have been around a LONG time. All branches of NJ's government are corrupt as hell.

Lets see, illegally changing the ballot for US senator when Torricelli was brought up on charges, No problem, NJSC says oh thats okay.

"Alleged" Child rapist Menendez. Ah yeah keep him on ballot, dont pursue the charges. Need I bring up "Shartacus" Booker?

All it takes is freebies in Newark. There are enough "votes" there to override the rest of the state.

They win all the time in New Jersey. Winning statewide is a bit trickier though, granted.

I didn't even bother to read up on this initially, as it's NO surprise that Menendez could be corrupt, but then I did and Holy Shit! Of course he innocent until proven guilty, but damn...This is gonna be hard to explain away!

A [SNIP] form the article linked in the OP:
quote:
The indictment, out of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan, alleges that Menendez provided sensitive and non-public U.S. government information to Egyptian government officials and took other steps to secretly help the country.

Those steps including ghost-writing a letter on behalf of Egypt pushing other senators to lift a hold on $300 million in aid to the country, according to the Associated Press.

A search of the couple’s home turned up $100,000 in gold bars and $480,000 in hidden cash, prosecutors said.

And, from the AP:
quote:
Gold Bars, Cash-stuffed Envelopes: New Indictment of Sen. Menendez Alleges Vast Corruption

Authorities found more than $100,00 worth of gold bars in Menendez’s home, and more than $480,000 in cash — much of it hidden in closets, clothing and a safe, prosecutors say. Photos included in the indictment show cash that was stuffed in envelopes found in jackets bearing Menendez’s name. Investigators discovered a Google search by Menendez for the value of a “kilo of gold,” and DNA of one men prosecutors say bribed him on an envelope filled with thousands of dollars in Menendez’s home, they said.

https://apnews.com/article/sen...c42ba707c9d0139349e9

Also from the AP article, an utterly laughable denial if there ever was one...
quote:
Menendez in an emailed statement accused prosecutors of misrepresenting “the normal work of a congressional office” and said he will not allow his work in the Senate to be distracted by “baseless allegations.”
