Old y.t. vids have a lot to be desired and I have no newer vids to watch. Old vids have mean guy targets with guns pointed at you. Or cameras or lady's with babies. Do the current higher tech drills have updated options ? Do they still teach you to shoot anyone and everyone with a gun or sword price pick ? Or Can you choose to not shoot a person if you don't hear a gun shot or maybe they don't show you a victim. Safety, Situational Awareness and proficiency. Two thoughts come to mind in considering your questions: 1) Action beats reaction every day, and probably twice on Sunday. 2) If you are going to use deadly force against a threat you need to be able to clearly articulate why you were justified in so doing.

Simulation is not reality, the latter is far more complicated than those who concoct the former. Realize that the authors of these fantasies have a product to sell, and will tailor their videos to accomplish such. That said, the training systems and equipment are getting better all the time. As an instructor, I am seriously considering introducing some form of simulation as preparation for an actual range trip, although I am not yet convinced to substitute for it. So much depends on mind set and (perhaps simulated) experience. "Bad guy" vs. "innocent bystander" is rarely a black/white choice even if there is no lawyer trying to blur what one would wish to be obvious.

I ask this because of the the recent body cam vids of what appear to be very questionable officer involved shootings. When mentality challenged, under the influence and physically advantaged enter the scope of investigation. I realize "time sensitive" is a large part of of the equation as well. My grandson's group use a "stressvest" for house clearing training. The vest is paired with laser guns. The vest will give the shooter an electrical shock if he shoots a good guy and vibration if you are shot. Paintball guns are also used. If the trainee shoots a good guy not only does he get a mean electrical shock, the trainee has to write an essay explaining what happened. .

Way back in the day , around 1984 to be exact , we went through a Shoot - Don't Shoot drill with live participants . The weapons were loaded with rounds with primers only and nobody was any closer than 8 feet as I recall . And we were wearing vests . Extremely stressful by design . The trainers started screaming at us as soon as we showed up and we had to double time between scenarios . It was conducted in an old two story school building and most of the lights were off . They had " Another one bites the dust " blaring on continuous loop .Most of the scenarios were no win situations and I think it was partly a test to see who would crack under a stressful situation .
