Are hot water tank connections all 3/4” thread?? Login/Join

I swear I asked this question a while back, can’t recall the answer, and can’t find the thread I made.
So maybe I did not actually pose the question.

I am removing the hot water tank in my cabin for 3 tankless units. Yes, I know this is not ideal or efficient for everyday use but that is not what it will he used for.

These water heaters require an inline water descaler. The inline descaler I bought accepts male 3/4” thread for the inlet and outlet.
Essentially I just want to remove the water tank and put the descaler in it’s place with a shut off on each side so I can cut off water to swap the filter unit out without water going everywhere.

So if I but a shutoff with male 3/4” threads on both sides I should be able to unscrew the water inlet hose from the tank, screw it to the shut off, put it to the inlet of the descaler, unscrew the hot water outlet from the water tank and connect it to the shut off and connect the shut off to the outlet of the descaler.

Of course I am 2 hours away from the cabin so I can’t measure the connections and have to buy all my materials here as there is no place close down there. Hoping to get it knocked out this trip.

So are water tank connections generally 3/4”?
Or should I get a set of 3/4” shut offs and maybe shut offs with another size on one side with 3/4” on the other just in case?

Here's a link to a previous thread of yours; perhaps it's what you're looking for.

I looked at water heater connections on amazon, and saw 1/2", 3/4", and 1" available. If you knew the model or even the brand of the tank at the cabin, you should be able to find a specs page for it online that would tell you which connection it has.

If you are asking that water tanks (pressure tank)have a standard 3/4 connector, then no.

If you are asking if water heaterS are standard, then yes 3/4.

Just aske my dad who is in the business.

He said pressure tanks can come in pvc slip or threaded, or brass, or galvanized, or have no connection from the factory and are made up by the guy installing the tank. But he said most he ran across are 3/4 female threads from the factory and he uses pvc cause it’s quick.

Maybe buy a boatload of adapters right before going, from somewhere that has easy return policies?

That would be my path forward in your case. Plumbing jobs, for me, are a minimum 3 trips to the hardware store.

Sorry, just a non-plumber over here trying to do plumber stuff.

I am referring to a hot water heater (tank style). I know it has 2 male threaded connections inlet and outlet. Just not sure on size though almost everything I am seeing for regular old household water heaters are 3/4”.
I so I went with the 3/4” on both ends valves.
I got caps for all the other sizes just incase.

Sure would like for someone else to be doing this job but ohh well.

Tank water heaters can be either 3/4 fip (female iron pipe) or 3/4 mip (male iron pipe) depending on brand/model.

I know for sure they are male. Fingers crossed they are 3/4” but at this point seems like they are.

Yes. 3/4. Did two home installs this year. Get the dedicated Shark bite flexible stainless woven connectors with ball valve at Lowes and be happy. Get the $2.00 removal collar so you can reposition as necessary on the other end.

Understand that Shark bite connects to copper or cpvc but NOT pvc. If you are pvc then get an adapter and some cpvc to do your connections.

Instead of a descaler at every heater, what about a water softener where the main water line comes into the house? That’s the way my house is plumbed and it works quite well.

I probably did not describe that well.
Just running a single descaler. Putting it in the place of the old hot water heater as the connections are already there.
There will be a small tankless heater connected to the kitchen sink, bathroom sink, and a medium sized one on the shower.
The Single descaler will suffice.
