I rent a property. It's a single property / residence. The landlord, who lives on the other side of the city, decided to place a political sign on "my" lawn. Does she have a right to do that if I rent the property?

Almost certainly it depends on your local laws. ______________________________________________ Carthago delenda est

Well it is her property, if she put up a Kummalla sign, just get a Trump sign and put it up right next to it! Then start looking for a new place to rent once she doesn't renew your lease LOL Or just toss it in the trash...

That's my fear. She wont renew my lease when I express my displeasure with her placing the sign on my lawn. Your analysis with the candidate choice is spot on btw.

You could call her and tell her you don't want any political signs in the yard, because it just sows division among neighbors making some former friends regardless of who the signs for and you'd like her to take it out that you don't want people to think you are a Harris or Trump fan, either way and you want to be left out of all the politics. While it's her yard it's completely disrespectful to put a sign in the yard without knowing the renters preferences. If she balks, go put a Trump sign in her yard...LOL
OTOH, she has the risk of losing you as a renter, if you've been there a while, paying on time, never a problem, taking care of things, losing you over this should be worry some to her. Maybe she'd prefer someone of the Haitian persuasion to move in on a government one time check then not pay... IN the end, just toss it in the trash and blame it on those ultra right wing vandals...

The entire area that you rent is yours to enjoy. If the yard is included in the lease then she would have no right to put in such a sign. That is how it would be in places I have either been a renter or landlord.

How about saying the people you work for have a policy against political affiliation displayed by employees and it might get you in trouble? My guess is the lawn is your to do as you please while renting, provided you don’t damage or modify it. 0-0 "OP is a troll" - Flashlightboy, 12/18/20

I’m with Fly_Sig. By renting, it’s your property and she doesn’t have any right to post any sign. I would think it would be like her hanging her grandkids pictures on your living room wall. Additionally, it’s stupid of her to risk having her property vandalized by some nut with a different political view, not to mention the danger it puts you and your family in. Perhaps a consult with a lawyer is in order.

Back, and to the left |
The leased property, while you don't own it, is under your care, custody and control. You can check your lease, but the standard is as O-O said. Personally, I'd burn the sign in place with an accelerant. Claim to know nothing and ask you landlord to refrain from putting in another. Considering how hated Kamala would seem to be that people are burning campaign signs and all. Then put up a Trump sign.

Relocate the sign to the dumpster, quietly, no discussion with the landlord. If she says anything, your response: "Sign? What sign? I know nothing." הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

In Ohio, a renter has the right to control the entire rented premises. Are we talking about a rented house? Because at least here, the landlord would not have the right to put a sign in your yard. Your state may be different, however. _________________________ "Age does not bring wisdom. Often it merely changes simple stupidity into arrogant conceit. It's only advantage, so far as I have been able to see, is that it spans change. A young person sees the world as a still picture, immutable. An old person has had his nose rubbed in changes and more changes and still more changes so many times that that he knows it is a moving picture, forever changing. He may not like it--probably doesn't; I don't--but he knows it's so, and knowing is the first step in coping with it." Robert Heinlein

Read your lease or rental agreement. Or... follow HRK's advice: just toss it in the trash... If you like where you live and have no other problems with the landlord I'd probably let this slide and go the trash route.

My random opinion.... Who takes care of the yard, mows the grass? If she does I think kinda maybe she can, but then you can also place your sign. If you lease and maintain the yard then it's all yours. Regardless I'd quietly remove the sign or add a red circle with a line through. We have in our lease to our renters that no signs can be placed in the yards or on the property. This goes for all exterior property. They can have a sign inside their unit in a window if they choose or stickers on their car. I would not put a sign of my choosing on my rental properties and we have 3 of them. Both single famiiy homes we have are on busy roads. The duplex I have is on a quiet country side road. The duplex had the polar opposite people on the political spectrum, this helped keep the friction to a minimum. Thankfully this is no longer an issue, due to one side moving.

Good advise right here. With a little luck, she might not notice it's gone until after the election.
