I've been mowing lawns since 1989 and have never had an incident. This one place I tend to had a gas line replaced and they had to dig up the sidewalk. When they replaced the sidewalk, they did a pretty crappy job and it is flaky and chipped with loose pieces of concrete. Last Tuesday I sent a piece through a random guy's window with the weed whacker.

I knocked at the business and they said the car didn't belong to anyone there.

Then a fellow approaches me saying "don't worry, I'm going to move my car". Eek I apologize and explain that I've already broken the rear passenger side window.

He is a bit shocked but not angry. I start to help him clean it up and ask if I can finish up the lawn and get back to him. I gave him one of my business cards to call me and go back to cleaning up the lawn. It takes about 2 minutes.

His friends (they must car pool with him) show up and they seem a bit angry over the situation but I promise to make things right and assure them that they don't have to worry. They calm down and ask me to blow the glass from under the tire with my leaf blower so they can pull out.

I do and then go put the blower in my truck. I turn around and they take off. *shrug*

They have my number but I've not received a call concerning an estimate for the repairs or anything else.

Does that make any sense? Confused Why would they take off like that?

Wasn't their car or they weren't supposed to be there.

They proceeded to the auto glass place his insurance carrier recommended and it was covered, fixed on the spot, and vacuumed.
Since the cost was minor, his agent wasn't going to pursue it.

They were actually space aliens and were recalled to the mother ship.

Either that or the were Russian agents.

This makes sense to me. Most insurance co. offer free coverage for broken or cracked windows. I would have done the same under those circumstances.

Windows or windshields? I was under the impression it was only windshields.

Well, set aside a few buck in the eventuality that they come calling for the repair.

Years ago, I did a U turn in the middle of the desert, only to be surprised by two tweakers in an S-10 pickup pass me at the last minute. I caused them to skid off to the left into a sand berm, tearing off the front bumper. I offered to pay for a new bumper. I gave them my phone number and drivers license. I set aside $500 for what I thought would be the repair.

Never heard from them again.

I'll bet dsiets & Jimbo54 are right. Would have been nice, and polite, of him to call you, thank you for your honesty, and let you know what happened, but...

Out of all this, that point in the story is when I thought you were either going to get mugged or something was up, they were aliens, etc.

Glad it was the latter.

I once pulled out in front of a guy on a rainy night and he side swiped me... did most of the damage to his car.. we pulled over he was pissed and told his wife to walk up the street to find a phone to call the cops. (this was before everybody had cell phones) I politely informed him there was no way I was going to let his wife walk up that dark street in the rain and I would drive up to the service station and call... he looked at me like I was some kind of crook.. So, I gave him my drivers license to keep and went and called the police.... the city station was about 2 blocks away and a cop was there when I got back.... we exchanged info but the cop did not write me a ticket and the cop felt like the damage was not that bad and if I wanted to pay for it then I could and for the guy to just get an estimate. I waited a week and the guy did not call me and so I called him.. and he grumbled never mind and hung up on me. What the heck? I called the cop and told him what had happened and I was still ready to take care of it and he said never mind about it...

Yeah, don't let them get it fixed by their insurance company and then come to you with a bill their insurance already paid, so they can pocket the money.

My mind went in a totally different direction...

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.
