Just because something is legal to do doesn't mean it is the smart thing to do. |
Is there any chance we might see the tax stamp requirement for silencers and other NFA items go away under Trump 47? I might get one if it does. I just hate the thought of paying to get permission slip to spend my money. Integrity is doing the right thing, even when nobody is looking.

Right now I'll settle for keeping the House. But we ain't gonna have the kind of numbers needed to change anything about the NFA.

An interesting question that I’ve pondered from time to time. I can’t imagine machine guns and other actual firearms ever being unregulated as they are now. The first time someone shot up a school or even open air gathering with an MG, there would be a huge outcry that could result in far more than a renewed ban on just those items. Suppressors, though, could be another matter. The reasons for that are obvious to most of us, and there has been some legislative attempt to remove them from the NFA process. But …. It was reported DJT was asked about silencers some years ago and said he “didn’t like them.” On one hand that was an off the cuff remark and probably not something he had ever given much thought to, so perhaps not something to be taken too seriously. On the other, though, second term Presidents don’t have to worry nearly as much about politics and have the political freedom to do much more of what they want. Despite all that, this would probably be the best time ever for removing suppressors from the NFA requirements that we’re ever likely to see. Republicans will still want to maintain the support of gun owners, and a concerted campaign of explaining why suppressors should be deregulated, or perhaps subject to nothing more than a background check like firearms, coupled with “We supported you, now you support us,” might work. From a personal standpoint, I’m not sure I’d ever buy another can. I was very enthused about the idea at one time, but realistically, the one I have satisfies everything I want one for. Except, maybe, for the 300 Blackout MCX …. ► 6.4/93.6

Considering what happened the last two times the Hearing Protection Act came up, only a quick court challenge has a chance.

This would be great although I'm not sure it's on the immediate DJT's agenda. This needs a strong Senate or House push. SBR’s, SBS’, and suppressors need to be removed from the NFA. Really, the whole thing needs to go away, but of what’s possible and likely enough, I’ll take those. ______________________________________________ “There are plenty of good reasons for fighting, but no good reason ever to hate without reservation, to imagine that God Almighty Himself hates with you, too.”

Actually, first you spend your money, THEN you pay for your permission slip, and then, sometime down the road, you get permission! That said, Don, Jr. and Eric Trump are BIG gun guys and may have some influence. JD Vance is a somewhat of a gun guy too, and could bring some inertia to the discussion. Combine that w/ some 'Real Reform' of the ATF, and there 'may' be a chance for SBR's, SBS' & Suppressors to be removed from the NFA during Trump 2.0! ____________________________________________________________ If Some is Good, and More is Better.....then Too Much, is Just Enough !! Or the balls. I think the only way it would ever happen would be in pushing the health and safety angle. If it was any other product, you wouldn't be allowed to sell it without a muffler. HOWEVER that may be a bell that we don't want to ring, seeing as how the other side is trying to ban guns for health and safety reasons. "You can save their hearing by banning them too."

I wish, that would be a dream law put in place. If I may add to this, eliminate stamps for a sbr.

What is the $$ number that they pull in from those tax stamps? If it's large enough, it may be hard for them to give it up.

Trump or otherwise, the President doesn't have the power to remove silencers from the NFA through decree, executive order, etc. The NFA is a law. This means only the legislature - i.e. Congress - can modify it. (Barring a successful court challenge that somehow results in some or all of the NFA being declared unconstitutional and therefore invalid. But that's quite a long shot at this point.) That's how our system of checks and balances work. So no, Trump being in office would have no bearing on such a law being proposed or passed, other than that he wouldn't veto it when/if Congress passed it, whereas a less gun-friendly President might. However, Republicans now having a majority in both houses of Congress might result in some favorable NFA-related legislation gaining traction and possibly making it into law, such as the previously floated Hearing Protection Act that was proposed in the Senate last year but died in committee.

I'd say the Republicans don't have the balls. They didn't the last time they had the House/Senate and this came up. ________________________________________ -- Fear is the mind-killer. While I don’t think they would want to lose the revenue, a change in regulations is a possibility. Meaning while they become an over the counter non regulated item, you still pay a $200 tax when you buy it

We all know that the NFA (National Firearms Act) is law. As changes to the NFA would/could be met with opposition and painted as 'controversial', having majority control in both the House and the Senate, AND a President in the White House committed to signing such NFA Reform are a key requirements if there's a chance to make it happen. Trump being in office therefore, has a lot of bearing on such a law being proposed and passed. How do you think the Trump Tax Cuts got passed? Congress acts on initiatives pushed by the President all the time. If meaningful reform occurs at the ATF prior to consideration of NFA reform, any push-back during likely congressional hearings on the subject (that might become opposition soundbites) could be minimized, neutered or eliminated. Further, if there's a real push coming from the President, and/or his emissaries in the Executive Branch creating inertia for NFA Reform, well honestly, that changes everything. ____________________________________________________________ If Some is Good, and More is Better.....then Too Much, is Just Enough !! I would also add that we may only have until the midterm election to make many possible changes. “There is love in me the likes of which you’ve never seen. There is rage in me the likes of which should never escape." —Mary Shelley, Frankenstein

Maybe silencer removal from the NFA could be a rider on a larger bill reforming the ATF to eliminate its excesses and “interpretations” so they can’t make their own rules against gun owners?

I’ve been hoping it’s SCOTUS that will remove silencers off the NFA. I thought there were cases percolating through the courts. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual."
