The only thing the damn thing is used for is to receive my daily batch of junk email. I fill up a kitchen trash bag every week with nothing but junk mail. We've gone paperless on bills, banking related correspondence, etc. why do I need to even have a mailbox? It cost $600 to have a nice brick mailbox installed. What a waste. It's just in the way when mowing and you gotta weed eat around it. The HOA only says what it needs to look like; doesn't say you have to have one.
UPS and FedEx deliver the goodies. I don't need the USPS.

I wish the progressives would get on an anti junk mail agenda. They could actually do something useful. Think of the fuel used in the whole production chain from forest to mailbox.

I suspect there is a USPS regulation that requires one to have some kind of mailbox. They have to have someplace to deliver the mail to. If someone has paid to send you mail, USPS has to deliver it.

If there was no junk mail, how would the USPS stay in business? Over 90% of our mail is junk; it feeds our recycle bin.

I'm not sure the USPS can compel you to have a mail box. In my girlfriend's town, for example, you can't get a mail box without a driver's license with the street address on it as proof of residency, and backup such as a lease or a utility bill. No evidence, no box.

To the best of my limited knowledge mailboxes are not required. In fact, I had an old neighbor who at least used to be without a mailbox.

Nope. Google says you don't have to have one. USPS has regulations on how big it can be, where it's located, etc. however, if you do have one the USPS owns it regardless of whether you paid for it.

Yes, call the post master (if you can find a number), but it’s hard to imagine what such a law would be. I have seen “unable to deliver due to no mail receptacle” on post office forms. Also, vacant lots usually have street addresses that presumably mail could be addressed to, but I’ve never seen a mailbox just standing there by itself. What I’d be curious about is whether the letter carrier would just drop the mail on one’s doorstep like they do with packages that are too large for the box.

I'm about to find out. I get all of my mail at my PO box. 100% of the mail in my mailbox at the curb is junk mail. I refused to retrieve it. Mail lady yanked it all, left me a terse note and forms to fill out saying I needed to put a hold on my mail every thirty days if I wasn't going to empty the box - yes, I have to RENEW every 30 days by filling out a form.

I scrawled on the forms that I get my mail at my PO box, gave her the number, told her I had just paid it up for the next six months, she was only delivering me unsolicited junk mail I had no use for - and that I would be quite content to never see anything in my curbside mailbox again.

We'll see what happens.

I have a slot which allows mail to be securely delivered inside of my home. Do the USPS folks own my whole house, or just the small closet in which the mail drops? I'm not being snarky - simply questioning the arrogance of the feds. Thanks!

We have several members who are in the employ of the USPS. They will be along shortly I imagine. [They are serving other customers at this moment and will get to you shortly.] You are not required to have a mailbox. For a while I had all of my street mail forwarded to my post office box. Junk mail is not forwarded. Forwarding first class mail costs the post office money but they will do it for awhile. Certain documents such as a renewed drivers license, ccw and others are not allowed to be delivered to a po box.

Some federal agencies will track you down through the USPS if they need to find you. There is a specific request form that the Post Master fills out and returns.

We've all heard of the IRS phone call scams.

The only official correspondence from a government agency, city, county, state or federal comes through the USPS.

I retired in "09 and at that time, they would only forward mail for a period of 1 year.

I used to have a route with a fair number of people who had PO boxes, didn't get street delivery, most of them didn't have mail boxes.
I will ad, a carrier doesn't magically know you have a PO BOX if/when you move in, or if you decide to rent one.

It's really, really annoying when people who don't get mail, or have a box, want to receive packages though. Sorry, you either get mail service, or you don't. If I know your box number, I might through it in the PO BOX stuff, but if not, oh well.


People really blow some of this "Fed" stuff out of proportion. I've permanently terminated peoples mail service because they threatened me, or their dog bit me, or some other unsafe or retarded ass reason.

You have to have a mailbox by law. If you don't, the federal government will mail you a fine.
