I recall reviewing the underlying mechanism when it was first announced. My initial reaction to the idea of Apple Pay had been "No freaking way." (I didn't even own iThings at the time.) But I went ahead and reviewed the description of how it worked, anyway, out of curiosity. Much to my surprise: I was impressed.

In my Wallet app, I have the Apple Card, a credit union credit card, a credit union debit card, and the Apple Cash card. If I want to use my phone to pay for something, I can use any of those cards to pay. My Apple Card is set as default, but I could choose any of the other cards as default if I so desire.

At the gas pump, depending if I have the company’s app or not, I can pay with Apple Pay. I hold my iPhone up to the pump to activate the sale. I pump my fuel, and the sale completes when I replace the nozzle. I get a message on my phone with the transaction info, which includes the mapped location.

If you forget your wallet and you are in need, at least you can use Apple Pay in an emergency situation since there is no yearly fee. So far, it has saved me the one time I forgot my wallet.

Also, the Wallet app maintains all of your purchase history, and you pay your balance with the app. The app will remind you when it is time. Again, since I use this system mostly as a debit card, I don’t want to fail to remember making a timely payment, so that’s good. (Interest = bad!)

Yes, there are better rewards cards out there, but this Apple Pay system is convenient, secure, and full of features…and it is free. Again, just answer the questions in the Wallet app, and you get an instant line of credit and an Apple Card sent to you IF you click the option. Did I mention the card is made of titanium!?

You don’t have to set up the Apple Pay Cash tab. I’ve never enabled it on mine and never intend to. It’s only if you want to want to directly send cash to someone via messaging. Apple Pay works fine without it enabled.

I use cash or a single debit card. I've tried to understand the notion of 'saving 1%' on a service I don't use because it costs more than it's worth to me in the first place.

I have no banking/financial data or apps on my phone. Retired now, I have no business accounts to manage. I never fly anywhere for any thing, although I did rent a car a few years back.

I've got Android. further concerns seem appropriate apart from Apple Pay.

Google Pay is about the same as Apple Pay and a little easier to use on your phone.

Not sure I trust Apple and I certainly don’t trust Google as a company, let alone giving them access to financial transactions

That's exactly how Apple Pay works in my iPhone XR. No double click, no face ID.

Mine either needs a Face ID or Touch ID confirm on my phone, iPad, or Macbook in order for it to work. I know on Google Pay, I don’t even have to have the app open for it to work.

How did you unlock your phone in the first place? If you have Face ID, you had to use it, or a passcode, to unlock the phone to be able to use Apple Pay, so not sure what advantage you are suggesting. Also, with iOS 15.4, in beta testing now, Face ID works with a mask. In any case, who wears a mask anymore?

If you have the iWatch, you can use apple pay from it without having to pull out the phone, great at gas pumps, tap the button twice, hold up to the reader and bob's yer uncle, no wallet, no phone, and they don't get to read your real cc using the scanner..

Costco doesn’t accept Mastercard. Visa and Discovery only

I have my Visa debit attached to my wallet and when chosen works fine.

I predominantly use my Apple Card through Apple Pay set as primary. Pretty much for everything I’m able to. In about 2yrs I accumulated enough cash back to buy a refurb M1 MacBook Air for my GF Daughter (just what she needed beyond her budget she already saved) and my MBP M1 max

I should clarify. Local Costco has had Apple Pay available for many years at the checkout registers inside the store, and at the food court. What's been coming "real soon" for quite a while, is Apple Pay at the gas pumps. They are almost there; they have contactless pay, where the proper type of credit card can be held close to the reader at the pump, but iPhone / Watch type payment does not work yet.

Well, it's clear to me that I need to go ahead and set it up at my first chance...

How do you get the "cash back" that using the Apple Card earns? I probably missed an option or two, but I set up the Apple Pay Cash tab and the earned cash bonuses go there. Periodically, I make a free transfer to my bank account.

There are two things on the Apple card screen in the wallet. At the top is a toggle that says Apple Cash. Below that, where the cards are, is Apple Pay Cash. Toggling the Apple Cash on gets you the cash back, but limits what you can do with it. All you can really do is apply it as a payment toward your card balance. If you want to do other things like send the money to someone or to your linked bank account, you need to set up Apple Pay Cash. I’m fine with just using the cash back as a payment toward my balance at the end of the month, so I just have the Apple Cash toggle on, but haven’t set up the Apple Pay Cash.
