They have announced the cross Iowa route for the Registars annual great bike ride across Iowa.

starting on the Missouri river,
488 miles of beans, corn, a town or three and then some beans and more corn, some hay fields, some nice barns, fancy new farm machinery , some corn fields then some more beans, some antique farm machinery, some more farm communities, then corn and bean fields, a lot of down home cooking,
a big city ( for Iowa , and then some corn fields, a few cattle here and there lots for friendly folks in the pack and in the small towns.

bendables home town then some corn and bean fields,
ending in the Quad Sillies on the Mississippi.

I did BRAN one year (Bicycle Ride Across Nebraska); thought about renegading RAGBRAI, but did not get to do it.

Great tradition: You dip your rear wheel in the Missouri when starting out and dip your front wheel in the Mississippi when you arrive on the Eastern side.

I lost 15 pounds in a week riding across Nebraska (500-600 miles) and was impotent for a month thereafter from time in the saddle.

It was great fun, but I would get a different saddle for my bicycle.

there is also another ride across Iowa that only goes on the gravel roads.

but I can not find it.

I think they started out with thirty riders and after 4 years they are only up to 55 riders

I did BRAG (Bike a Ride Across Georgia) one year, it was fun. I’ve heard RAGBRAI is a slow rolling party.

It is. Party buses and tents of debauchery traveling the whole way across the state. An enjoyable time. If that is your thing. Sweating on a bike all day and drinking beer all night only to wake up to start pedalling and puking is not my cup of tea. But, if you like that go for it.

I'd love to do it and this might be the year.

When did you do BRAN? I recall many years ago BRAN was ending up in my city when a tornado/bad thinderstorm was coming through. Spent some frantic moments pulling people out of their tents and throwing 6-7 people at a time in the back seat of my cruiser and hustling them to shelters to wait out the storm.

This year is s good year if you want a mix of small towns and cities. Ames and Iowa City are both super cool places and should be a lot of fun for the 10,000+ riders.

There’s usually at least one person who runs it, and several people riding something other than a bike. Someone rode a longboard a few years ago.

the serious ( balls out) bikers do it in half the time of 80% of the casual riders.

I know 15 people that rode half of the distance, but only two that took the time to do the whole route

My daughter did RAGBRAI last year.
She had a blast but you have to be reasonably fit to start with.

yeah , you never read about the number of people that were either treated and released or sent to the hospital

My son did RAGBRI a couple of summers ago. He turned 21 on the final day, and several of the riders bought him rounds that evening. He enjoyed the experience.

I did RAGBRAI in '91. Several of my group had ridden it every year since it began and one of them proceeded to round every day's ride to 100 miles just because. The costume day was a hoot. And the guy riding slowly along each day with polka music playing from a jam box strapped to the back of his bike and sign on the back saying "On the eighth day God said 'Let's Polka!'". A good time was had by all.

96, or 97 I think. No weather troubles that year. Biggest problem was eating some of the small town dry with all the riders. You need to eat a LOT to replace those calories.
