Prayers are for all. Those who cares about him, whacky dingbat that he may be, do not deserve the heart-wringing anxiety which comes with the hospitalization of a loved one. Sanders has his own opinions and a core group which have hoisted those opinions onto their shoulders. He'll likely lose DNC nomination and run as an independent, splitting the D vote. I've not heard more than a few sub-10-second sound bites of his in my life. Know nothing about the man. What state is he from? Liberal New England, that is as close as my understanding goes. He seems an old, tired, and confused man, bitter at a capitalist system laid down in his own patch almost 2 ½ centuries ago.

My understanding is that by the time a stent is required, feeling “discomfort” is a bit of an understatement. I hear it hurts like hell. If true, the report is trying to downplay the seriousness of his problem.

Don't stents just clog up in a few years anyway? If Bernie was a normal schmo (not a politician) in Canada how long would he have to wait, 10, 15 WEEKS? Or would he hop on a plane to America if he had the money?

I didn’t see Bernie going to Cuba or Venezuela for his heart procedure? It’s supposedly free there.

I want to thank sdy for using the correct term “procedure” rather than “surgery” in the title to this thread. The press routinely fails to make this distinction; just as they call a cardiac arrest a “heart attack”. _________________________ “Remember, remember the fifth of November!"

^^^ OK, doc... so what's the difference between a "cardiac arrest" and a “heart attack”? Or is it just that "cardiac arrest" is doctor talk for what we plebes call a “heart attack”? "Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." -- Justice Janice Rogers Brown "The United States government is the largest criminal enterprise on earth." -rduckwor

Technically, "cardiac arrest" would be when the heart stops beating. A "heart attack" could be many things, but the general meaning of a "heart attack" is a myocardial infarction (MI), which is a blood clot blocking the flow of blood to a vessel supplying oxygen to some part of the heart muscle, usually causing it to die, which could lead to cardiac arrest. Where the MI is located and how large the vessel is relates to the severity of the "attack." You could also have a variety of electrical malfunctions (cardiac arrhythmias) affecting the rythm of the heart that would often be described as a "heart attack." Doc H. is correct. In simpler terms, a heart attack these days is revealed by chest pain (most frequently), patient is brought to the ED by EMT's where EKG and enzymes reveal potential damage to the heart; usually the patient gets taken right away to the cath lab and a stent is inserted to open a blocked artery. It is usually eminently survivable, hence no big deal; the patient is put on meds and gets back to their life. A cardiac arrest is a BFD. The heart has stopped pumping, the brain will die if blood flow is not restored within minutes. Outside the hospital arrestsurvival is under 10%. I moaned when news reports said Carrie Fisher had a "heart attack" on a plane; she had a cardiac arrest. On this board we have probably hundreds of people who have had a heart attack and are doing well. My guess is we have maybe 10 who have had a cardiac arrest and are alive to tell about it. As for "procedure" vs. "surgery": surgery involves cutting open the body, in this case the chest cavity, by a cardiac surgeon. A "procedure" could include surgery, but the term is usually used to refer to a nonsurgical intervention: for the heart, a catheter is put into a radial or femoral artery, a balloon with a stent over it is placed into a blocked artery and inflated, the balloon removed and the stent left in place. These are done by interventional cardiologists, not cardiac surgeons. People used to think because I'm a cardiologist, I did heart surgery. Cardiology is a branch of internal medicine, it's a different training track completely. _________________________ “Remember, remember the fifth of November!"

^^^^^^^^^ Thank you for the clarification. Another poster earlier in the thread suggested he would need weeks of Cardiac Rehabilitation. I think it is premature to think that Sanders would have to undergo weeks of Cardiac Rehab. if he only suffered chest pain and did not have an MI or cardiac arrest. Is this correct? I do not think we have enough iformation to guess about any cardiac rehabilitation.
