I'm lucky to have $20 cash on me ever. My bsuiensss partner carries a minimum of 2k cash for "walking around", a few K in reserve at the shop and he keeps 20-30k cash at his house. He's also got a lot of "quick flip for cash" things... gold, Rolex watches, etc. I've been trying to make an effort to stow away a little here and there, as well as silver coins.

I don't understand. How are you more likely to get your card hacked by using it for a small amount at a convenience store?

This thread reminds me of something I was told a very long time ago. There are 3 things a man will always lie to you about.
1-The money he has.
2-The women he is sleeping with.
3-The gas millage he gets.

I don't walk around. Have a job and family, work and then go home.
When I do walk around wife or daughters usually have a few bucks if nessesary.

Not sure what I would "need" to buy.
Never let the gas gauge get to low to drive home.
If going on a trip where I may need money, will add a few bucks to the wallet.

What if you need to tip someone for helping you out or get into a jam?

Never been in this sort of jam and can't imagine a need to tip that can't be put on a credit card.

One should always carry some cash on them for emergencies.

I do when the possibility of an emergency could occur such as on a trip away from home.

Have never had the need to buy cheap items without a credit card.
I don't do candy bars and lattes.
Why would anybody use a debit card?
I use my credit card as a free loan, it is paid off in full every month.
I would encourage anyone running with a balance on their credit card to stop using it and go with cash.

Credit card charges can be contested prior to the merchant receiving your money.
Have actually needed this benefit before.
I am with you on Debit Cards.
Money directly taken from your account, I don't understand why you would want to use them.
Cash, if I have it, I am tempted to use it on small things I do not need.
Believe I actually save money by not having cash in my pocket.

Usually $100 or so in my wallet.

I have my travel wallet for when I’m on a trip - I keep about $500 US and another $500 worth spread out among Euros, Pounds, Durhams, HKG dollars, etc to have walking around money when I land somewhere.

I seem to have very different philosophy than most of the others posting here. I believe that cash is King. You guys that rely on your credit cards or ATMs may be disappointed someday.

Why? Well, one example is the power outage that we had in May of (maybe) 2005. May is usually a low power use month, so our local utility took 2 out of 3 coal fired generators down for annual maintenance. Unexpectedly, the temperature soared into the 90 degrees range, so everybody turned on their A/C, and the increased demand crashed the grid. There was no electricity on most of the Delmarva Peninsula. No credit cards, no ATMs, no gas stations operating. No telling when service would resume. I was 120 miles from home, without enough gas to get home. I was just a couple of gallons short....which I was able to obtain, at a premium price, since I had cash.

I always keep at least a couple of $100 bills in the wallet as reserves. Usually about $150 to spend, including enough $1 and $5 bills to pay any restaurant checks in cash. I never use a credit card in a restaurant - I don't let my card out of my sight, and I don't like to wait for the server to bring my card back.

I also keep some cash at or near home.

Recently, I have had several credit card charges declined by the banks for security reasons. I had my co-pay at the pharmacy declined, because the pharmacy was 60 miles from my house, and the bank didn't like that. I don't like it either, but the pharmacies nearer to home don't stock the medications I need every month. The banks are getting picky, so have some cash!

It's not like you are earning any interest income on your cash balances. Hypothetically, if we all took our cash out of the banks and stuck it in our fireproof safe, the banks might start paying interest on deposits again.

$5 -$100 in my wallet generally speaking, I take out cash at the ATM for my wallet in just $100 amount at a time.

Cash at home varies considerably, never more than $2000.

I withdraw $200 every Friday morning for spending money. So, depending on what I am up to and if I go anywhere I have between $0 and $400 in my pocket in any rolling two week period. The only cash in the house I have is 20 British Pounds (and a few pence), one and a half Kuwaiti Dinar's, and 5 Dirhams from the UAE.

But I got a metric shit ton of ammo Smile

I keep a folded $100 bill deep in my wallet, for emergencies. I also forget it's there. $10-$20 in th glove box, in case of no wallet.
Probably $40 for walking around cash. Minimal house money.
