I get to see a lot of what people keep locked up at home due to my line of work. I would say a few thousand is pretty normal among the "gun guys" with gun safes. I've seen cash well into the six figures. I have seen precious metals into the seven figures. Most of the time none of this is insurable. Insurance companies won't touch this due to the potential for fraud. If you have two readable serial numbers the Feds will replace crispy money. | |||

In an emergency I could get a Big Mac, however would need to be pretty darn hungry to part with the pennies. Don't see wheat heads much anymore, and they haven't printed those two dollar bills since 1976. Not much. I keep maybe $50 on me and about five hundred at home. Also a few ounces of gold in the safe deposit box at the bank. Last time I talked to my insurance gal to renew my home owners policy she made it a point of making sure I understood that any cash of mine is only insured for a couple hundred dollars. | |||

In the wallet, not much. In the car, I try to keep $20 for a gas emergency. Thinking about it now, I would estimate that keeping one month's of expenses in cash would be reasonable. That sucks. I keep some emergency money in a couple of places, about $200 each broken down. Working cash, it goes from $20 to $200 and i replenish it from the ATM. How on earth do you guys walk around with $0 in your wallet? That is beyond me. What happens if the phone lines are down and your debit/credit card doesn't work? What if you need to tip someone for helping you out or get into a jam? One should always carry some cash on them for emergencies. Also, nothing pisses me off more than being on line in a busy convenient store and some jackass is taking 2 minutes to buy a $1 item with a debit card. Which is also a surefire way of getting your cc or debit card hacked as well. | |||

I carry a couple of hundred with me. I never give my credit cards to anyone and therefore pay cash at restaurants, etc. It's been almost 10 years since my CC info was last compromised (knock on wood).
