The chemical is just melting off the loose layer of oxidation. Even with a clear coat I suspect the oxidation will return even faster. The best solution is new lenses. I got some (TYC brand) from Rock Auto for my own car, with bulbs, even, and they light better than the OEM, throwing some light out to the sides. I could understand, however, not wishing to go to the trouble for an old car. The bumper probably has to come off, there are 14 million little push pins, and any little screws or bolts it might have will be rusted up.

I helped a friend with some work on his tick infested property so I got some Ben's 100 repellent -- 98.7% DEET. So very nasty, the wife made a salad a couple days after and I swear she used DEET salad dressing.

I read an account of a British SAS trooper’s training, and in the jungle portion it seems they practically bathed in “mozzie rep” (mosquito repellant). They did need to be careful with some gear, though, because it all but dissolved anything plastic.

When I wanted to de-haze my old car’s headlight covers I first tried a coating type product. It worked for a while, but it didn’t actually do anything to remove the damage. Later I tried Mothers polish based on a YouTube recommendation, and it worked very well. It does require rubbing and buffing with the stuff on an old t-shirt, but it went quickly and I was very happy with the result.

Several reports and I'm linking only one that says do not use bug spray, the chemical contents can destroy the plastics in the lens/covers. It also says to avoid Acetone, Clear coat paints and various home cleaners.

Some the best home remedies are Toothpaste and Toothpaste with Baking Soda, Baking soda either mixed with white vinegar or own it's own. Lemons, and put a tablespoon of Baking Soda on the lemon.
