I do. I have lived in this community a long time and know a lot of people. I like to keep up with things. Some of my buddies think it is morbid. What are your thoughts?

I only read the obituaries when somebody I know died because I want to see what they said about the deceased. If you're goin' through hell, keep on going. Don't slow down. If you're scared don't show it. You might get out before the devil even knows you're there. NRA ENDOWMENT LIFE MEMBER

since i don't get any local newspapers anymore i check the local funeral homes obits about every other day. I missed a good friends dad passing that i would have made a appearance at the visitation, and hope to not miss another one that i should show some respects

Used to when I still got a newspaper. Haven't had a paper delivered in years though, so no. ________________________________________________________ "Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil." Doug Patton.

I semi-regularly check the newspaper obits online of the town I grew up in the’50s to ‘70’s. Have many more friends from that era than currently.

I’m subscribed to the obituary service for my small hometown funeral home. I handle our high school graduation class bulletin board so I share those with fellow classmates from time to time. We’re 40-something years out now and, unfortunately, have had several classmates make an unwelcome appearance in those obits in recent years. *** "Aut viam inveniam aut faciam (I will either find a way or make one)." -- Hannibal Barca

This is a small town, and if someone I know loses a loved one, I want to be able to express my condolences to them and offer any help they may need. So, yes, I check the obituaries online frequently.

No. If I'm close enough to you that it matters, I'll know when you're dead. I won't need to read about it in the paper. I also don't like viewings. Standing in the visitation line at my Grandmother's viewing was one of the most awful, emotionally exhausting things that I've ever had to do. I also find the whole custom of making up a dead body and putting it on display to be repulsive. I'd rather remember people how they were in life than have my last memory be their dolled up cadaver. When I die, I hope they incinerate my corpse and have a party.

[quote]I'd rather remember people how they were in life than have my last memory be their dolled up cadaver. When I die, I hope they incinerate my corpse and have a party. If you truly feel that way decide which funeral home you want and have a chat. If you want you pay for a life insurance policy in their name and have YOUR wishes are carried out. Otherwise it is up to your survivors to decide. Even a cardboard box cremation is expensive.

I don't read all the obits, but do look for familiar names. At this point many are younger folks than myself. It's a habit from about 30 years ago after working inpatient floors at the local hospital, checking for former patients.

I read the obits in 3 papers regularly and check the local funeral home in my home town. Like an earlier poster, I am responsible for keeping my classmates informed. I also look at the other classes that were close to ours and look for siblings also. I am a historian and there is so much history in the obits of ordinary folks.

My Dad still gets the paper. I don’t. He reads them. He’s in his 80’s and has lost most of his friends. He lets me know when he thinks it’s someone I know. "Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." -- Justice Janice Rogers Brown "The United States government is the largest criminal enterprise on earth." -rduckwor

No. I don't get a newspaper or read any online and I don't live in towns where I would know anyone. Coincidentally though, I received a message from a high school classmate just a while ago, that another of our classmates had died.
