Watching TV when suddenly my condo felt like it was collapsing. Sounded like tornado or hurricane hitting out of nowhere making whole building sway and seemingly about to blow down. Lasted longer than most so it took a bit to realize it wasn’t wind but earthquake.

I'm not in earthquake country but the largest quake here in MI yrs ago, it sounded like high winds had picked up for several seconds and the house creaked a little bit and then felt like a large truck driving by.

No obvious damage to my place that I can see and nothing broke. I wouldn’t be surprised if boulders got dislodged causing brief road closures in a couple places but haven’t heard of anything major.

Looks like the epicenter was on the Big Island, south of the Captain Cook monument. Glad you're OK.

Yeah, we had a 5.7 a few years ago centered 120 miles away. My ceiling fan was swinging and it knocked a lamp off a coffee table. You're just along for the ride.

Glad you're ok. I've never felt a earthquake and don't want to.

I've been through hundreds as lived in SoCal for 3 years and the even more seismically active Alaska for 5 years.

Magnitude and proximity are two big factors in how you experience it. The three most memorable were the:
  • first one I ever experienced in SoCal. I was having a lazy Sunday afternoon on the couch with the cats and they woke up suddenly and both took off before I felt anything. It was 4 something, but the epicenter was visible sight away.
  • 5.4 during business hours in Alaska with the epicenter in visible sight of the office.
  • 6.2 that lasted 5 minutes and the epicenter was just a few miles north of downtown. I was getting ready to move to Canada for an expat assignment and had the choice of selling my home, renting out my home, or leaving it vacant with a property mgmt company. The amount of damage convinced me it was time to sell as I wouldn't trust a renter or property mgmt company.
