All other things being equal, a saw blade would probably make a worse injury. As bad as your cut was, a grinding or cutoff wheel, because it cuts by friction, has a little bit of "cauterizing" effect.

Using gloves (or wearing rings) on stationary power equipment, like saws, shapers, jointers, etc., is a no-no, as you discovered.
