Calm down there jhe, I’m just asking. Not every post is super serious and I’m just wondering for the sake of wondering. The question isn’t keeping me up at night and if I’d found out that I was the only person tipping post-tax I doubt I’d change my ways. It’s simple curiosity.

A little thread drift.....

Can we get rid of the tip as the primary income for servers? The employer should pay them their salary, not the customer. Yes it would raise prices, but overall less than the 20% of the "suggested" tip.

Then the customer could GIVE a tip based on the service received rather that a since of obligation to make up for the lack of salary the current system has propagated.

Most of Europe does it this way. Works well.

I tend to tip a little more anyway so I use the total bill amount.

Okay, and sorry if I sounded more cranked up than I intended.

Both the wife and I tip on the total bill with tax plus a little bit extra if the service was at least adequate.

Having had two sons that worked in food service early in life, we appreciate how difficult serving the public can be. Restaurant staff earn every penny that comes their way.

It actually doesn't work well here.

At all.

A pretty popular and busy restaurant here in Philly tried to go no-tipping and raised prices so they could pay their waitstaff more and guess what happened? All the good waiters left, customers balked at the higher prices and they ended up closing their doors after desperately trying to go back but the damage was done.

We are not Europe and never will be.

I asked it of my favorite waitress and her answer was, "some do and some don't". She expand it to say some don't tip white wait staff at all.

Me, anyone who acts snooty gets and insult for a tip. There is a minimum degree of courtesy a server needs to show to earn a tip. We're tipping to pay them for service. Being polite is required. With luck the server will starve if they can't figure out how to do the job.
