Whelen Powered Airhorn… finally installed on the Wrangler. Login/Join

I’ll start off with: I am not impersonating a police officer, or even attempting to. Yes, this setup is completely legal in my state. I’m damn tired of the left lane shitbrickers.

I had the Whelen Powered Airhorn Plus PA on my Toyota. It was fantastic. I use it off road when no one knows who is to go first on a trail, step up the PA; “go ahead, there is plenty of room to pass me here”. Every time I have done this, I got great compliments on how cool that is, super useful, etc.

Where I live, we have a very large retiree population. Nothing wrong with that, but we have some people who are just out of tune with the world around them. I’m pretty patient, especially with older people as my dad is old and drives like shit. I’ll at least coach him when we drive that he needs to be in the right lane, etc. he’s almost 80. So I’m really patient, I think of these people as my dad, or the fact I’ll probably be this way some day.

Then there are the shitbrickers. The people who have to go ten under the speed limit, in the left lane, matching the person next to them at ten under. These good for nothing, traffic causing, vile scum… these are the pieces of shit that I abhor the most. A flash of the lights and a toot of the horn does nothing for these lane police, keeping us all safe from the obscene display of speed by going close to the limit.
Now, a hard press of the powered airhorn and a polite reminder in a commanding voice “Slower traffic must keep to the right!”, that’ll get some movement. The sound of the horn and my godawful voice has these shitbricks crumbling into the right lane faster than an Ethiopian on a Big Mac.

So it sat on the shelf for almost three years as I couldn’t find a place I would mount it. I finally was fed up with the left lane shitbricks, and built a bracket to hold it in place under the headlight. I really dislike the location, and I’m not a fan of the look, but there is nowhere to mount that thing where it would be concealed and able to be heard. I wanted it behind the grill, but there isn’t enough depth between the grill and the many different cooling radiators, as the speaker and bracket would be too much.

Side note, did you know that six plastic rivet clips (push pin clips) hold the grill in place? Take those six out and there are a handful of push in pieces and that’s it. Literally a five minute job.

So back to the bracket, I measured a dozen times and it came out correct. There was no where I could easily bolt a plate with two bolts. There was one bolt that secures the bumper bracket to the frame. Plenty of pre-drilled holes, but no way to get a nut on the back. I ended up welding a stud to the plate that goes in a hole like a bolt, but never tightens. This gives it the shear support and the bolt that attaches the bumper bracket sandwiches it tight to the frame. I hope this description makes sense. I should have taken a few pics before I mounted it. It’s actually pretty cool, over engineered, but quite okay.

Anyways, here are a couple pics and a video or two…

Very nice! Function over form!!

I could certainly use something like that in PA to help encourage and direct the four vehicles all simultaneously stopped and frozen at the perplexing and stymying “Gordian knot” mystery of a four-way stop-sign intersection!! Mad

WRT mounting where there are "plenty of pre-drilled holes, but no way to get a nut on the back." You might want to investigate "rivet nuts" - like pop rivets, but the crimped part is threaded for a bolt.

Or they speed up to try to keep you from passing on the right. South Carolina is full of shitbrickers, especially on I-95

Looks good. Sounds even better!

I was at the junkyard pulling a wiring harness and happened to notice a Wolo air horn. The guy that runs the yard said the horns and compressor would set me back $4.

Finding a place to put everything was quite the task. Room is at a premium on most any newer vehicle.

They come in handy when someone is getting all of their TikTok updates at the green light.

Had a parts customer once that mounted a set of Leslie train horns in the bed of his truck. He was the fleet mechanic for a street sweeper company and his territory was five counties in and around Detroit. He said if the truck’s factory horn didn’t move them the Leslies got their attention.

Damn the hearing loss, full speed ahead!

Back when I had the BMW, I had the top down and this shitbag with a train horn under his truck thought it would be funny to give us a blast for no reason in heavy traffic.

The sheriff behind him didn't think it was funny, pulled him over and I started a med claim against him. Wiped his BI policy clean. He's lucky I didn't go after his house and retirement.

Back when I had the limos we had sirens & PAs in them. Even had blue lights in them. One of the guys that worked with us liked to give driving lessons over the PA, especially those that involved merging in heavy traffic.

I've used the PA. I used the airhorn. I even used the lights multiple times, and the sirens once. I've exceeded the posted, passed on the right, and blown a few stop lights.

Not once have I been sued into insolvency or had a claim against my insurance as a result. Guess I'm lucky in that department.

I will say that electronic airhorn gets a bit more attention than a regular horn. It would probably come in handy with those buried in their cell phones with the lights turn green.

Without a doubt the most used weapon in my work arsenal.
Have thought about putting one on the Tundra as the horn is so weak.
The old company Taurus had this wired directly to the horn pad in the steering wheel and it was GLORIOUS!
New company Tahoe not so lucky.
Last I checked you are creeping toward $500 for everything so not likely for the Tundra to get one anytime soon.

I don't need a PA in the Jeep, I have just the opposite problem. Every spring when I take the top and the doors off, it takes me a while to remember "Oh yeah, other people can hear me now." (when I'm calling them names and cursing them at traffic lights.) Big Grin

Yeah, the price hasn’t changed since 2020 when I originally bought it. I picked it up from sirennet.
I disconnected the stock horns and ran the relay wire from the +horn cable to the PAP. So when I hit the horn on the center of my steering wheel, the PAP sounds.

It’s quite effective. Smile
