I had just turned 14 in October of '71 and was listening to my Jimi Hendrix and other rock records of the time incessantly, and getting into the usual mischief of a 14 year old living in Marin County, CA, a junior hippy if you will. My parents were looking to buy a large ranch property up north and were spending a lot of time on the road with realtors. They eventually found an 82 acre very nice property for a song outside of Santa Rosa in June '72 and I spent the next 50 years living in Sonoma County before moving here to Vegas.

Walking to the corner to catch a bus to school, 6th grade. Coming back home, playing with HO slot cars (AFX, Tyco), collecting stamps, riding my home made junkyard BMX bike up the street to a corner vacant lot or down the street a couple of miles to a bigger lot with terraced levels. Listened to Al Green, Jackson 5, Monkees 45s. In Jan '72 I was delivering food orders for a barbecue restaurant in Ann Arbor. The owner furnished the delivery vehicle, a 1963 Thunderbird convertible. If anyone knows Ann Arbor winters...suffice to say, I never got the top down during my employment. The best thing about that job was, when the restaurant closed, any unsold meat would be distributed to the late shift staff. I was sharing a house with three other guys at the time, and became a very popular guy in the neighborhood when I showed up at midnight with a paper grocery bag (remember those?) full of ribs and other delectables. The cook was an older black lady from Mississippi, very sweet. She'd start cooking about 3:00 AM and somehow always managed to cook too much for the day. Still the best ribs I've ever had.

I was living one of the dumbest decisions in my life, graduating high school early. Not due to planning but luck, I learned I had earned enough credits to graduate after one semester and joined the Navy. I was supposed to go soon after, but the Navy decided I'd wait until I turned 18 in September. I was in limboland on the CACHE or delay program and then didn't go. I could have fucked off an entire semester and just chased girls without a care in the world. Why didn't someone advise me to stay in school? I was always pressured from many angles to be more serious and complete tasks and become part of the machine. I should have gone with my instincts and chased a good time.
