They're with the in-laws. I'm not overly concerned at the moment.

The Tour de France starts today. I wonder how the current riots will affect the race. Well, we shall see. As it were thought, the race spends the first few days in Spain.

You've said your family is in Brittany (?), by all indications, all the activity has been in the major metro-areas (Paris, Marseille and Lyon) haven't seen anything in Brest, Rennes or, Lorient.

Disrupting the Tour will be interesting, folks are pretty passionate about that race and spectators can get too close sometimes.

The city of Brest did have some damage. Lots of fires and the like. Your typical riotist fare. My wife commented to me that it was bad, and that she couldn't imagine how bad the bigger cities were.

Her sister lives in Rennes, but she didn't mention if there were riots there as well.

You're getting first-hand ground truth, thanks for the update. All the best to them and your travels, maybe keep an eye on train & ferry schedules as things progress.

Interesting to see the general citizenry starting to get outraged over the general looting, vandalism and destruction of various buildings, to include the main library in Marsielle....WTF burns down a library? RAID and other LE there are usually pretty aggressive in putting these types of things down, will be interesting if there were command decisions that stunted a more aggressive response, which allowed things to spread.

Yesterday Brest just summarily shut down all public transportation without notice at 6pm cause they were expecting unrest leaving a lot of people trying to find new ways to get home from work. Yeah, things are a mess in France right now. I'm flying over there in five weeks.

It's the same bullshit that we have to deal with here. Some dumb cocksucker breaks the law, resists arrests, and ends up getting himself killed. So of course that means burn it all down.

I hope your family stays safe.

Please excuse my ignorance but are criminals with guns a big problem in France?

Read a few European based articles and I shouldn't have been surprised. The leftist media and politicians:
  • blame the right.
  • do anything but blame the people committing the crimes.
  • ignore that politicians kicked the can down the road repeatedly. For example, make a deal with the 3rd world with 60% literacy rates to trade immigration for cheap oil. They mainly sent the illiterate unproductive citizens along with cheap oil.

  • Ego is the anesthesia that deadens the pain of stupidity

I'll be in Paris in two weeks after getting some sunshine and Tapas in Barcelona. Wife and I are not looking for a Seattle CHAZ style 'Summer of Love" experience during our trip to Paris. Want to enjoy our Croissant and coffee in peace without the smell of burnt out buildings leftover CS.

Now, I need to look up the address for Emily in Paris. So charming...

Our family is headed to Europe this week for a 3-week music tour our kids were selected for. Paris is one of the stops for their performance, but the tour company is keeping a close eye on the current situation and will amend the itinerary if the need arises.

Of the 5 countries they perform in, France was the one I wished we could have skipped.

    From the website ‘TrendingPolitics’ -

BREAKING NEWS: Rioters Attack Home Of French Mayor Vincent Jeanbrun, Injuring His Wife And Child

“The mayor later confirmed the attack in a press release Sunday morning. “Last night, a milestone was reached in horror and ignominy. My home was attacked and my family was the victim of an assassination attempt,” Jeanbrun wrote. “My determination to protect and serve the Republic is greater than ever. I will not back down.”

Glad that the Mayor’s family was able to get out of their home alive, but the time to “protect and serve the Republic” would have been to not let the 3rd World savages into your country in the first place.

ZERO difference between what happens here or anywhere else. Just pick a reason, a convenient excuse to riot. Reason enough, or As good an excuse as any to do what we really want to do anyway. Yep, I'm so politically outraged that I need to steal a big screen Tv to show my anger. Right.

I support protesting. Heck I can even support "rioting" to a degree. But arsonists and looters, they should be mowed down on the spot.

France is a BIG country, I wouldn't let this derail your plans; don't fall into the same anxiety trap non-American's try to bring up when discussing shootings and firearm availability in the US. Most of the unrest are confined to the banlieue's, although a number of shops were looted along the Rue de Rivoli, which is one of the upscale shopping avenues. Just keep aware of the latest news, don't be consumed by it, maintain communication with your tour operator and, get familiar with neighborhood names/locations. If an audible has to be called, there's plenty of destinations outside of Paris to visit: Normandy, Mont Saint Michelle, Loire Valley, Versailles, Giverney, Champagne, etc.

The restaurants and cafes are going to take care of you in-so-far as where to stay away from and when things are closing, chat-up your waiter or, house-staff. All the business' that are supported via the tourism industry (retail, food service, tours, museums, retail, etc..) are on-edge as they are in neck-deep into the season and are freaking out to the government about getting these's kids to knock-it off. It was announced that Paris busses were stopping their evening service at 2100, which means they have to be in the depots by 2100 so, service will start to be curtailed by 1-2hrs before that.

Big compared to what? It's the size of Texas. US, Canada, China, and Russia are big.
