Fair winds and following seas, Gentlemen.

A sad day for the Navy, the SEAL community, and for the United States all around.

Very sad indeed. I have to ask this why didn’t they carry a locatator beacon. Buoyancy vests? Boarding a ship in heavy seas.

Beacons are good for maybe 48-72-hours, and that's if it's out of the water and transmitting correctly. When in the water, only your head is viable and not submerged, basically the size of a basketball...more like a volleyball.

Did they wear glow-sticks, illuminators or strobes...don't know, SOP for each unit is different. In my experience, SEALs came across as a bit cavalier & loose with processes and procedures. One story I recall from a friend, prior to a joint mission, the SEAL unit relied on each member to insert waypoints and markers onto each person's GPS, whereas on the SF ODA, all navigation & comms gear was turned-over to one guy so he could do all the inputs thus making sure everyone was covered and things were consistent. This is just a lone example, we just don't know the details to this incident, and we're better off we don't, the work itself is dangerous.

Carl Higby (SEAL) stated on his show today that he also believes that there's more to this story that we're not being told. He'll be discussing it more on Greta's show. I don't think it's quite as simple as two SEALs falling off a boat...never to be seen again.

I'm not familiar with either of these shows. Details please (particularly the Greta one)?

The more I read about this, the more I cannot shake the possibility that these men were loaded with gear to the point of having no buoyancy were they to hit the water; a terrible visual to imagine for both Sailors.

I won’t even pretend to understand how a mission like this is supposed to work, but I will be interested to read whatever reports are released after the investigation.

A terrible outcome. Would they not wear some kind of beacon?

I saw a short video by Rob O'Neill yesterday. He commented that he and his teammates would periodically put on their entire mission loadout including ammo and weapons and jump in a pool to determine sink/float and alter their gear accordingly.

My prayer now is that the two SEALs found each other and at least died together.

We did this quarterly as well as before each overwater deployment.

I saw this and was going to mention it here. It didnt sound like it was a common practice or maybe it was just a DEVGRU thing, but it certainly sounds like a good idea.

I would have thought that any SpecOps unit, especialy SEALs, would have trained muscle memory for shedding gear when hitting the water unexpectedly.

It's really hard to imagine how two Navy SEALS could simply fall off the side of a boat and disappear. Considering their training, equipment and conditioning, something ain't adding up.
