Automotive Question - Auto Stop
2020 Outback - 4 Finger pokes to dis-able it.
I'm getting used to the drill - but I still forget.

The boxer engine is a little noisier so it is a startling off/on.

My Audi remembers the last way it was set and leaves it that way until you push the button again. It is in the off position currently.

Rented a newer F150 last month with this Auto-Stop "feature" as well as the Auto High-Beam Headlamps "feature".
I find them both a bit distracting, but could probably get used to them if I had to...

I rent a lot of cars when I traveled on business

If I rented a car and it had this bug, I returned it and told them to get me one that didn't have it

GM still uses this garbage in their trucks and SUVs.
You can shift to manual and put it in 5th gear and it will still shit gears normally and never go into 4 cylinder mode but this is a pain.
I gladly paid the $200 for the module to always have it disabled. The truck drives like a dream. Unplug the module and it is complete garbage!!

There is an aftermarket device for this problem.
Good luck buying it from the website below.

It will not do that unless you press the brake pedal all the way down. If you do not have the AC on, it will shut off for a maximum of ~2:30 on our 2018 Highlander, not sure of the RAV4. If you have the AC on, it will only shut off for :45 or so.

I have it on my BMW. I coded it to stay off. Not sure others can do that.

Just bought my daughter a new Subaru and thankfully it was the base model without auto start/stop.

The auto stop feature is a result of government fuel economy mandates. The OEM has to meet certain fleetwide averages, so cars now have all sorts of extra features to improve fuel economy even if it's only a small amount. And the added cost for implementing these, such as upgraded starter to handle the higher cycle life, is added to the price the customer pays.

The SAE says that the auto stop can improve fuel economy by 5-8% in heavy traffic (depending on conditions of course). With average around-town driving it's probably only a couple percent at best. Likely not enough that the average consumer would willingly pay for it if available as an option with an associated higher price tag. Hence the government mandate.

I don't know how folks wouldn't notice or be annoyed by this. Even after the shock of first time it happened in a rental, it's just weird for the car to go silent and no vibration in chassis. I couldn't care less about saving that $.67 per month, keep my car running.

It bothers me enough that until I don't have an option, I won't buy a car that doesn't allow for this to be shut off once and to "stick" and be off until turned back on even after you shut off car and restart.

Good news - this is how Porsche works with a single push of a button. Oh, shit. That's sorta bad news too... Confused

I've experienced this. I took it as a challenge to launch the car before the starter could possibly engage. Two-footed, fast transition, whatever it took. The start still lags and I feel sorta sad for that poor ol' starter and first gear all at once.

I've got it in my truck and hate it. Yes, I can turn it off, but I have to remember to do that every time I start the truck because it defaults to auto stop. It also turns off when I have the truck in Sport mode, but again I have to remember to do that every time because the truck defaults to normal.

There's a couple of ways around it in the Ford, one is just short circuiting it. The other is an after market switch can be installed to change the default. Unfortunately both involve pulling off trim pieces of the dash held in by plastic clips. I have never had good luck with those, something almost always ends up broken.

The most annoying was a Chevy Malibu rental car. It had auto stop and there was no way to turn it off. There was also a lag between releasing the brake and the engine actually starting. So much so it made one think seriously before pulling out into traffic.

I know on my 16, you could code out the auto stop with ForScan.
Had something to do with disabling the battery monitor system, to keep it from recognizing the charge level on the battery, so it wouldn't auto stop without knowing if it has sufficient battery to restart.

I hate that thing. There is no way you can tell me that it does not add additional wear on the battery and starter.

That can be easily disabled through the menu option using the left hand set of controls on the steering wheel.

I rented an F-150 with this feature and it actually got worse fuel mileage than my slightly older F-150 at home that doesn't have it. I've gotten loaner cars from the dealer with it, and it isn't a nice, smooth transition off or back on.

Screw the government and the manufacturers that put crap like this in place.

Which will be greatly reduced. Which is what they want. Which is why the auto industry will work hand in hand with the government getting this to be required equipment in the near future.

You're lucky. My sister has two Subaru's, she was complaining about it the other day. The one her son drives has a simple one button push to shut it off. Hers on the other hand, she has to do three or four steps on her touch screen to turn it off.

I’ve conditioned myself to push a bunch of buttons when I start 2 of my cars. Auto SS is just one of them. If I’m waiting for a train, I’ll just shut the car off.

Get the latest software update for the head unit. It is now 1 push to disable it. I have a 2020 Outback also and the system was horrible. At least now it is easy to disable it even though you still need to do it on each start up.
