Your fathers and grandfathers also if you recall. Mine was a manual. I was born in ‘72 and I received my first watch around age 6. It was a Hot Wheels watch. I remember being proud because although it was a gift, my parents wouldn’t let me wear it until I could tell time without fail. It was great motivation. As for my father and grandfathers I do not know.

I can't recall, but it may well have been a Timex, that's what you bought in the fifties. OTOH, my dad was very cheap thrifty so whatever was the cheapest brand available at the PX or Sears was more likely.
In those post-war days that meant a Japanese-made copy of a Timex. You youngsters may not remember that there was a day when Japanese manufacturing was considered what Chinese is today.

Had a few throwaway in youth, couldn't recall what any where other than a Fossil in HS.
Parents got me a Movado Fiero [quartz, ref 0605619] for my college graduation Still have it, need to put a battery in it, but it takes the most microscopic flat blade screwdriver to remove the caseback.
Don't recall for sure, but I do know it was a High School graduation gift, traditional for all us boys from our parents. Probably a Timex, certainly manual/analog.
Never have been much for watches due largely to a professional background in electronics. High voltage and jewelry do not mix. Likewise for my retirement hobbies of welding and mechanics.
I did get a nice Citizen Eco from Dave@Mimi's several years ago and wore it when I worked in retail, but now that I'm retired and don't care what time it is, it lives in a drawer.
Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.

My father was a Tool & Die maker at Timex for about 45 years, so I always had a Timex "test" watch. You got them to use for a few months and then they took it back to examine; it was part of their quality program. Got a new one immediately after handing one in.
My first one was a simple manual analog watch (no idea of the model number), probably around 1964.

First watch I can remember was a Mickey Mouse watch when I was around 7 y/o. First watch I ever bought for myself was a Seiko Dive watch in 1987. Still have it. Replaced the rubber watch band with a Seiko stainless steel band. Gave it to my son. I told him take care of it since it was MY first watch I bought.
