For anything that will have multiple color stains or dyed portions like the sign below I alway use poplar as it’s a light color & allows the colors to be brighter.
No I refuse to use power tools of any kind.
All by hand with hand tools.

I picked up a set of these, they’re a new company and have impressed me so far.

Some of the smaller & micro tools I use

I think I've seen a post of yours where the carving started out not so impressive looking and ended up spectacular. This is another one. Impressive.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

Amazing craftsmanship! Love the results and a great way to invest (vs. spending) your time.
