I'd posted in a thread several weeks back about my father having ALS and slowly deteriorating. Today was the day I've been dreading with all my heart.

My mom had been caring for him at home and she called yesterday afternoon saying he was worse. Much worse. I'd just been to see them 3 weeks ago and, although weakening, he still seemed to be months away from dying. Funny how life can slip away so quickly.

I took the first flight from Charlotte to their home in Florida this morning. Once I got there I spoke to let him know I was here and that everything was going to be ok. A flash of recognition in his depleted condition. 20 minutes later he was gone. In my heart I know he was ready to go, but wanted me there to care for mom so she wouldn't be alone. Once he knew she was going to be taken care of, he passed peacefully and quickly. Selfless to the end.

I'm glad I was here. For her. For him. For me. Watching him take his last breath in this world was hard, but he's at rest now. I'm glad for that.

Under the wide and starry sky,
Dig the grave and let me lie.
Glad did I live and gladly die,
And I laid me down with a will.

This be the verse you grave for me:
Here he lies where he longed to be;
Home is the sailor, home from sea,
And the hunter home from the hill.

Love you dad.

My condolences loosing a parent sucks. I lost my only sibling, sister, and my dad 90 days apart. Totally sucks but remember the good times.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today, who no longer understand that fact.
