I've been unsuccessful ordering three quarters of a pound at a local deli counter. The digital scale makes them stupid.
One worker stopped at 0.33 pound. I had to clarify that three-quarters means 0.75 on the scale. Another worked stopped at 0.25 pound while checking out the woman behind me. I had to clarify that three-quarters means 0.75 on the scale.

Time to switch to metric, I guess.

I'm a high school science teacher with 30 years experience. For at least the last 10 years I have observed a marked decrease in my students' ability to tell time. I have a "sign out sheet" on a clipboard at the front of the classroom that I require my students to sign out with their name, destination, and time whenever they want to use the Hall Pass. Nobody wears a watch anymore so they always ask me for the time and when they do I point to the clock on the wall above the door they have to use to exit the classroom. Most students turn back to me and say "I can't read that clock!". I came to find out recently that the elementary schools don't teach how to read a traditional clock anymore. Not coincidentally my students ability to understand fractions has also declined. I think it's time for me to retire!

And we spend far more on education than any other country. How did you vote on the last school bond election?

It's this very reason my dad wouldn't buy me a digital watch when I was an elementary school kid in the early 80s (and digital watches were the rage). I remember clear as day dad telling me that I needed to be able to look a clock and understand how to tell time--and how to manage my time. He wanted me to understand exactly how long "45" minutes really was.

My grand daughter calls a normal watch a 'hands clock' and tells me her mother says they are old fashioned. Guess who's getting a Mickey Mouse watch for Christmas?

I remember teaching our girls this stuff and it was hard for them. They also thought quarter meant 25 not 1/4. I think we teach time before we teach fractions, and maybe that is the problem...
