I was talking to a friend of mine the other day and mentioned a reference to time in the conversation.
I said, "It was a quarter to 3."

He didn't know what time I meant. I thought everyone knew that stuff.

You guys dredge up more memories than you can imagine.

I VERY clearly remember an event as a yute, probably between 3-6 and able to tell time on the only clock of the time (you know with hands) and to count money just fine. My older sister was tasked with waking up my dad absolutely no later than a quarter after some hour (7 as I recall) so he could make some commitment. She had to leave earlier but handed that off to me with clear instructions.

Not wanting to disturb the slumbering bear early, I watched the clock carefully until precisely the appointed time and went to wake him up. At 7:25.

Well, a quarter was 25 cents, so surely this was what we meant when telling a toddler who sure as hell didn't understand fractions.

Apparently NOT!!! Hilarity did not ensue, and I've never seen someone so torqued up over 10 minutes since. Eek

Really? I also thought everyone knew this stuff.

So I assume he wouldn't know what time it was if
you said "Half past 6" either?

Honestly, I think he kinda knew what I meant. I actually may have said "a quarter of 3".
Either way, it threw him off.
If I said it was "half past a monkey's ass" he might know what I mean.

Yup...really sad at the level of common stupidity in the world now. Went to the coffee shop the other day for some java and a muffin. Total was $5.68 and gave the lady $20.70. I had to tell her my change was $15.02 after she tried to figure it out about 3 times, giving me the incorrect change all 3 times. Hayzoos Kreestoos people!! And she wasn't a young woman by any stretch. I just shook my head as I walked off with my coffee and muffin.

Well, "a quarter to" or "a quarter after" whatever time should be pretty straight forward. Not sure how one cannot know what you're talking about.

However, one that always annoyed me is when someone tells me "a quarter of...something."

To me, a quarter of a time--let's say 8--should be 0815. But it is apparently supposed to mean 0745. If you're a quarter of something, in this case 60, that's 15, right? Three quarters of 60 would be 45. That's how I see it anyway.

I'm not a fan of when people say a quarter of. Just say "a quarter to" which should make perfect sense to everyone. Although now I learn that may not be the case...

If it’s December 1941 in Casablanca, what time is it in New York?

What? My watch stopped.

I've been thinking about this for a while. A few years back, a watch with numbers across it was a digital watch, and a watch with a face was just a watch. Now a digital watch is just a watch, and a watch with a face is an "analogue" watch. One of the tests they use to measure the progression of Alzheimer's is drawing a watch with a specific time illustrated. What do you draw now, "15:15"?

Today I got a call from a young woman. I needed to give her a phone number. As I read it off, I heard a series of beeps, which set my hearing aid to shrieking, so I yelled. The woman said, "I'm sorry, I was putting the number in my phone." Freakin' moron.

When I was a youngster, my grandma used to tell me sometimes, "watch your watch". I'm still not quite sure what she meant.
She also had my dad get her a "hoozit".
I know that that was a pilsner beer poured into a nice mug. I'm drifting too far from my thread.

EDIT: I may have found the answer after some google search.

W — Watch your Words.
A — Watch your Actions.
T — Watch your Thoughts.
C — Watch your Companions.
H — Watch your Habits.
