French Toast or Pancakes? Login/Join

When we visited old friends in Tasmania, Nanette (the queen of her realm) made a Dutch Baby. It’s like an oven-baked pancake that rises then deflates—hard to describe, but boy was it delicious.
We have another friend who makes French toast that is stuffed with cream cheese.
Then there are blintzes, crepes…
Locally there’s a brunch place that makes an incredible French toast that’s stuffed with something; and topped with fruit, maple syrup, vanilla…OMG.
Personally I prefer waffles. I recently got a new waffle recipe—Liege style—and am looking forward to trying it on the grandkids.

Yes to both

French toast made with french bread, covered with fried apples and whipped cream.

Blueberry pancakes with maple syrup
sometimes regular pancakes with peanut butter and applesauce.

I meet very few carbohydrates that I do not like.

French toast except instead of an egg batter use a high quality melted vanilla or whatever ice cream. Dip the bread in it and cook the same as normal.A Jacques Pepin recipe.

Now that sounds interesting and with endless flavors of ice cream you never run out of choices. Do you need to still oil the pan or is there enough fat in the cream?

Both. Homemade French Toast always but if I'm dining on pancakes it needs to be those from the Brick and Spoon in Orange Beach, AL. They are so good all you need is a little fine powdered sugar. They are so good you can pass on the syrup.

Place I went to on the beach, long gone, used to make French toast out of Cinnamon Raisin bread with sliced bananas between two slices. The bananas almost melted in there. Made it at home few times. One of my favorites.

Ah....picking up some apple-cinnamon and cinnamon swirl breads tomorrow to try for French Toast!

Normally enjoy brioche bread for French Toast with a pat of quality butter, some maple syrup or fruit puree, and a dusting of powdered sugar, but this bread variation sounds interesting. Smile

Okay tried it with some Pepperidge Farms cinnamon swirl bread. Decent but much prefer my standard with custard made of eggs, cream, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and sugar. Mine has a more pronounced cinnamon flavor but will admit using cinnamon bread is not a bad option in a pinch.

I made homemade pancakes a week and a half ago, and French toast this morning. From the 1st bite to the last, my preference is French toast. By a mile.

For me, the best French toast is made with thick sliced bread that is a little stale. It keeps it's form when placed into the egg, milk, vanilla and cinnamon batter.
