My hunch is his female friend shot him.

I've heard of people farting and then blaming the dog... But I can't say I've heard of someone shooting themself and then blaming the dog.
I put it at about a 50% chance he shot himself, a 49.9% chance the woman shot him, and a 0.1% chance the dog did it.
