Hi. I had been using a software expense tracking service called Expensify. They were a perfect setup for me as a 1099 contract employee. I was able to track and categorize all of my income and expenses for a calendar year.

I was able to categorize my expenses into the categories that my tax preparer asked me to use. The software was able to print out a 5-6 page end of year report that I would hand off to her. Between that and MileIQ, life was good for me.

All of that changed the other day when the CEO of Expensify decided to spam his 10M+ users with a "Vote for Joe" email. He insinuated that to do otherwise was evil. Typical leftist crap. However, now that he revealed what he thinks of me, who knows what he has done with my information and what leftist target lists am I now on?

I never "supported them" as I was a free user, small potatoes guy to them. I didn't need the full site resources, so there was no need to buy into their apps or service for me.

My question to the group is do any of you have any recommendation for a free or low cost alternative to Expensify. Searching the web yesterday and the day before only left me very frustrated.

Most of the competitors want me to create an account before revealing pricing. I have downloaded one or two, only to find that they are waayyy more involved than I need.

I do not need to report anything to anyone except Uncle Sam 4 times per year, which I do myself until the big one in April, which my preparer does.

Please don't tell me to just make one in Excel or Numbers... That is way above my abilities. Big Grin I liked Expensify because it was easy for me to use. I didn't need to be an accounting wizard to use.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all.

Maybe not a perfect fit for you, but I have used a combination of Totals for client billing, and Moneydance for banking/investment/expense tracking. The former is free, and MD can be evaluated for free without a purchase (limited number of transactions without a paid license). MD does not transfer data from Totals, but does pick up client payments when they hit the bank. Setup/categorization can be as simple or complex as you like, and can be modified at any time. I am happy to address specific questions via email, if you wish.

Thanks architect. I will add it to the list of potentials to research further. So far, I have Smart Receipts and Zoho, but I stopped downloading stuff at this point because it's all Greek to me. I'm going to read up on each app / service to see what might fit my needs best.

I like that Moneydance lets me try it for free. I will look it over further.

Totals isn't for me after looking it over. I do not need to invoice anyone. I am in commissioned sales. They just mail me my checks when I produce for them.

Thank you very much.

Don't have a suggested replacement, but I was an early Expensify user, even though I haven't used the app for several years.

I got his deranged email as well and was tempted to respond. Then I figured if he was stupid enough to send an email like that, any response would be a waste of time. I marked it spam and deleted it.

I haven't used expensify for years, but happily closed my account permanently when I got his batshit crazy email.

np149, ask your tax professional. I'm sure they service a bunch of clients who use other software and they may be able to guide you on which one they prefer that would suit your needs.

Why not just create your own spreadsheet in Excel

Thanks everyone for the replies and suggestions. I'm still reading up on this. I'll ask my tax preparer for a suggestion like Hildur suggested. Again, my need is really very basic. I'm not an Excel guy, so making my own is out of the question.

I found a couple of possibilities on the app store I'm looking at. The trouble is they are hard to judge without a free trial. Also, some appear to be made by foreign developers, so they have a few language quirks.

I'll keep plugging away at it.
