I was at the range the other day. Two cops from a large department showed up with suppressed .308 rifles. After a few shots I went and stood behind one of the guys. One turned around thinking I was trying to get his attention but I told him I’ve never seen a suppressed firearm before and I was just enjoying it. His response was “Would you like to shoot a suppressed rifle”? Hell yes I would! I could not believe the level of suppression out of a can so small. It couldn’t have been much over 7” long if that, and it was wrapped but I’m guessing it wasn’t much fatter than a soda can. I think most air nailers make more noise than that rifle. I was truly impressed.

I was shooting with a few buddies a couple weeks back, proned out shooting rifle. On one of the strings getting back on the gun, I forgot my ear pro. I cracked off a round of 5.56 via a Surefire Socom Mini. My first thought was "that was loud" followed by, "oh fuck, I forgot my ear pro". No ringing or issues I'm aware of, loud but not painful. I wouldn't recommend making a habit out of shooting without ear pro, but they work. NRA Life Member Steak: Rare. Coffee: Black. Bourbon: Neat.

I gotta get an oven mitt to bring to the range. Putting a can on my full auto MP5 clone means it's staying on there and uncased for quite a while after I'm done, as it's too hot to touch. Freewill Firearms 07 FFL, Class 2 SOT

Spread the word, gents. Suppressed is just better.
https://a.co/d/00Y3T70v Those are for changing out cans and also getting home with cans too hot to case. Just make sure when you get home that you uncase them and remove the cover because they’ll keep a hot can hot for hours. The portable USB rechargeable fans also do well for cooling cans down at the range, just set the gun on the bench propped up enough to not burn anything and set the fan to blow on it. Take your pick on Amazon. ______________________________________________ "If the truth shall kill them, let them die.” Endeavoring to master the subtle art of the grapefruit spoon.

I have not drank the suppressor kool aid yet. I like to to do practice shooting with guns in the condition I would normally use them. An edc will not be suppressed so I will not be likely to practice with one. About the only possible use I can foresee is maybe to shoot a varmint/pest in the yard. I only have a couple of .22 pistols with threaded barrels and the cost of the suppressor is more than the what I paid for either of the guns. The cost factor mentioned and the NEED to get a permission slip (even if it is free now) just is something that rubs me the wrong way. Convince this old man why I'm wrong. I got one just to play with it and because it's short and compact and will work on several guns I have. It will eventually go on my bedside gun, once I have a P226 threaded barrel in .357SIG. Freewill Firearms 07 FFL, Class 2 SOT

Rimfire cans are the best use of suppression as far as I’m concerned. Cheap entry price, the high number of rounds/range time per dollar spent. No ear pro needed for rimfire. The single downside I’ve encountered is this, everyone around me is touching off boomers and I’m going to be wearing ear pro anyway. ----------The weather is here I wish you were beautiful----------

My first suppressor was a Knights for my Mark 23. It’s fairly quiet. Well, it sounds like a pneumatic framing nailer. So most people, if they heard it, would not associate the sound with a firearm. You’re a lying dog-faced pony soldier

I have a Yankee Hill Machine 5.56 can with a quick disconnect style attachment. I use it on three AR-15s (24-inch heavy barrel, 16 inch Sig M400, 10.5 inch Franken AR). On the 24 inch the sound is like a pellet gun, on the 16 inch the sound is a little louder, and the 10.5 inch upper sounds like a .22 long rifle. I also use it on a Savage .17 HMR heavy barrel... on that it sounds like a popcorn fart. __________________________ More blessed than I deserve. http://davesphotography7055.zenfolio.com/f238091154

As long as we're on the subject, and I don't want to start a new thread .... I want to put a YHM can on my SBR'ed SIG P556. It's a 10.5" barrel. Pretty sure a 1/2x28 thread. But do I need some kind of buffer or bushing on there? And, don't flame me for this, but is there any chance my can for 9mm will work on this rifle? Freewill Firearms 07 FFL, Class 2 SOT

Too bad 400m and I live in Illinois, cans are illegal here. Can't even buy a threaded barrel. I've never even seen a suppressor. *sigh* -------------------------- Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats. -- H L Mencken I always prefer reality when I can figure out what it is. -- JALLEN 10/18/18

Unfortunately we both live in IL. The State,County, and local government has banned so many types of firearms and accessories that I would be VERY cautious shooting around a couple big city cops at the range unless I personally knew them, especially if I happened to bring a "Illegal" device with me to the range. I would not dismiss the idea that the IL. government would buy a membership and spy and report on members that may be violating the law. A simple traffic stop after leaving the range could ruin your day. Two big city cops shooting a illegal suppressed firearm at a private range. I would think they would have there own range for this and possibly be violating a Dept. regulation taking that illegal suppressor out to a public range. Its a shame we need to think like this but we do live in a political shithole.

I would think it'd be hard for undercover cops to legally acquire a can in IL for such a purpose. A Form 4 requires CLEO notification. Bypassing that would require a law letter for demo purposes. Obviously, ATF wouldn't bother them over it, but I could see a pissed off citizen making it a PR problem. Could be wrong. Freewill Firearms 07 FFL, Class 2 SOT

According to the spec sheet for it on Silencerco's website, your Spectre 9K is rated for 9mm full auto, .300 BO subsonic full auto, and .300 BO semi auto. A 10.5 5.56 will turn your can into a single-use titanium confetti party favor.
I'm guessing you also haven't shot many, or any suppressed weapons. It's one of those revelatory, self-explanatory things once you do.
I dunno, I always find this to be a bit of a silly argument. I own a dozen cans from .30 cal on down to .22, and four (was five, sold one) 9mm cans, and I don't carry a suppressed pistol. I've never even put a suppressor on my G43X. I do keep a suppressed 19X for a house gun, though, and I think there are great reasons for it. Suppressors are at their best and most beneficial on rifles, then pistol caliber long guns of whatever stripe, and then .22's. The most fun I have shooting is suppressed subsonic 9mm with my Stribog, 19X, and 92FS (I recently confirmed it's a better suppressor host than the P226 as a random aside), but my suppressed M&P 22X blows all of those away for pure grins. If I really wanted to do some sneaky shit with launching a projectile, that would be the one, with a thumb on the back of the slide to keep it from cycling. It's scary quiet. I've shot a number of suppressed Taurus TX22's with FRT's in them and for sheer laughs, it's unbeatable, but also starts to trend heavily into the waters of actual utility. I shot one just two nights ago. I forget the exact number the shot timer spit out, but it was right around a second to dump all 22 rounds in the magazine.
You don't own any rifles you think you might use for a defensive or offensive purpose? Hunt? Target shoot? Either your needs are different from a lot of ours or you haven't really thought about it, or as I mentioned above, you just don't have any experience with it. The blast mitigation with a 5.56 alone is almost always enough to convince the uninitiated. Come to Phoenix for the next East Valley Tactical Suppressor Range Day (every fall and every spring) and come try out hundreds of cans from dozens of vendors. It's $30, ammo is unlimited, and when the crowd thins out around 2:00, the lines drop to nothing and you can get hundreds of rounds downrange through every can that's currently on the market and worth paying attention to through every kind of suppressor host, many of them full auto, and then tell me the only possible use is shooting rodents in your back yard.
You haven't looked into it lately, or you're buying ridiculously cheap .22's. The best .22 can on the market can be had for under $400. With the changes to the NFA this year, the market is positively flooded with cheap cans. You can get into something drastically quieter than shooting unsuppressed for a couple hundred bucks.
Then the process they put in place to dissuade you from exercising your right in the face of their unconstitutional bullshit worked. The process is the punishment, and I would go so far as to say that the changes that have happened can be laid directly at the feet of those of us who gave the government the finger and signed on the line anyways. Those purchases funded organizations that pushed through the first legislative changes in nearly a century. Every suppressor approved is another number on the scale that tips the balance in our favor if and when a case makes it to the Supreme Court. Say it with me, now: "Common use."
Mufflers are government mandated on cars because the noise can be reduced and because it would be nuisance not to. It's the exact same technology, invented by the same guy: Hiram Maxim. Government made suppressors illegal because the idea of The Man not knowing where people were shooting was scary. You can do your own math on this one. The short version is: It's worth it, but you can't explain the color blue to someone who was born blind. Only experiencing it for yourself will really make you understand. ______________________________________________ "If the truth shall kill them, let them die.” Endeavoring to master the subtle art of the grapefruit spoon.

I gave up hunting several years ago' NO, I have never shot a suppressed firearm, haven't even seen one at the club. Don't know anybody that actually has one. $400.00 is more then I paid for one of my pistols, 2an one was about $400.00. But I guess according to you I'm silly just because I can't think of a single good reason to have one.. So be it. Integrity is doing the right thing, even when nobody is looking.
