Rumors of my death are greatly exaggerated |
Hey gang. Sold our old Toro today. It was ok, but didn’t do the best job of bagging the grass. What is the best in your opinion please and why? Like to spend less than 7 bills if possible. Thanks for any input! And no, a goat isn’t an option... "Someday I hope to be half the man my bird-dog thinks I am." looking forward to 4 years of TRUMP!

Dunno, but if the drive system on the Toro SnowMaster we bought winter-before-last is any guide, I'd be inclined to give Toro a look. "America is at that awkward stage. Honda. They make the best walk-behind movers, in my opinion. I'm on my third; the first two lasted about 12 years each and were still running but I wanted to get a new one. Buy one at a Honda dealer though, not Home Depot. "If Gun Control worked, Chicago would look like Mayberry, not Thunderdome" - Cam Edwards

How big of a yard? Mine is rather large (just under 1/4 acre) and my 24-volt Black & Decker has been going strong for about eight years with two exceptions; the stepson overheated it causing a thermal fuse to require replacement ($10) and I bought two new blades when buying the fuse to get the free shipping ($13 each). dealers supposedly have a better grade of mower than the big box stores, esp on riders, big box, think walmart etc, have them built to a price point, which means there may be compromises in longevity and quality https://chandlersfirearms.com/chesterfield-armament/

When I was researching push mowers, Honda was recommended as being much better than all the others. They're not cheap, though. Another thing I read was the self-propelled part of push mowers seemed to break a lot. That may not apply to Hondas, but at the time I was looking for something simple and cheap. Fast forward 8 years and my Husqavarna 7021P push mower is still working great.

Honda without a doubt!! This is year 9 and it has never not started on the 1st pull. It is kept outside in one of those plastic garden box things. Oil change each year fuel not left in it over winter and only ethanol free fuel is used. Only issue is the handle bars are starting to rust. I just paint them each season. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have. I will be your brother, and I'll hold your hand. Very happy with my Honda. Got sick of replacing Craftsman ones every fourth year. Fuck Briggs and Stratton. Jesse Sic Semper Tyrannis

I've had 2 Hondas. Good mowers and good mulching. You can't go wrong. But you can do better, for maybe just a wee bit more. Last year I bought an Ariens Classic with a Kawasaki engine. It is commerical grade through and through. It mulches as well as my Honda, but handles heavy grass better. And the drive system is better by far. On top of that, I can walk upright behind it with my elbows bent. On my Hondas, I have to stoop over a tad and mow with my arms straight. My back kills me mowing my yard with the Honda. I got the version of the Classic with the soldi front axle. Ariens makes a swivel front wheels version. I wish i had got it. This is a very heavy mower and takes much more effort to lift the front end than the Hondas. The deck is a very heavy gauge steel. I’m happy with the $400 Honda from the local mower shop. It seems a tick better than the $400 Honda from box store P229

I think I paid about $450 for my self-propelled Honda at Home Depot in 1998. The self-propelled part went out in about 2008. It still runs and mows well and most of my yard is fairly flat, so I’m still using it. I change the oil, spark plug, and air filter every year and have replace one wheel that wore out a couple of years ago. *** "Aut viam inveniam aut faciam (I will either find a way or make one)." -- Hannibal Barca

If they are like chain saws sold by the big box stores, you are correct. A dealer showed me the parts list, same saw, big box version, dealer saw. He said the box stores have a price point to sell and ask the mfg. to make a saw to fit the price. Results? Cheap saw that lasts a year and then toast. BTW- I have a Honda mower and it is going strong after 7 years! Seasonal service is the key. Sorry for the drift, but buy from the dealers !!

Home Depot sells the HRR216VKA Honda mower for $399. Honda's website says MSRP is $479 MSRP. Some Honda dealers sell it for $399. I believe these would all be the same mower.
