Looking at trading in my QX60 for a new ride. I have narrowed it down to two options. Highlander vs 4Runner. Never owned a Toyota, but other family members love them so I am going to give them a try. I rented both for a week at National and I am still torn. I do about 20K miles a year so the 17 MPG on the 4Runner has me scared a bit, but I love the power of the V6. I read that the 4Runner in 2025 is going to the 4 Cyl turbo like the Highlander. Both have the third row seat for cargo which is what I like. Anyone owners out there of either that can chime in on what you like / dislike on these two models? Thank You.... NRA Life Member

Thank you Very little |
4 Runner rides like a truck, since it's based on a Tacoma, the Highlander is going to have a better ride, if you don't go off road, and since other than this year KY winters are pretty mild, the choice JMO would be a Highlander.. 4 Runner does have the cool looks though...

The 4Runner does not ride like a truck. Years ago, yes. Any Toyota you buy you’ll likely get tired of driving it before you wear it out. Good luck. ——————————————— The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Psalm 14:1

I'd have the 4Runner over the Highlander, just personal preference. I've been eyeing a few 3rd gen 4Runners recently, always liked the look of them. My dad had 2, an 03 SR5 V6 & a 05 Limited V8, both 4wd. Largely issue free, though the V8 did develop a small coolant leak, and is a timing belt engine. The Enemy's gate is down.

We went through this. Ended up getting a very lightly used 2021 Highlander with the V6. Very nice rig. Lots of gadgets. So plenty of tech for us. Less is better. Good power. Comfortable. Bigger than I thought it would be. Lots of room. Four chair seating. It is the wife's rig. I rarely drive. Gets 27 mpg on the highway. Ours is Toyota certified so good warranty. Overall it was the right rig. We went used because I wanted the V6 model. We considered the the 4Runner, but the Highlander was the right choice for us. Good luck. I’m into over landing so the 4Runner would do better for me with fewer mods. I’ve watched videos of modified Highlanders, and I was impressed how well 5hey did. My problem with the 4Runner is that the seat seems to be on the floor. Your feet are out in front of you with your knees bent so a lot of your weight is on your butt. I want my weight distributed between my legs and butt. I’m currently a Subaru guy, and I find the Outback and Crosstrek have a similar seating position as a 4Runner. This is one of the reasons I opted for the Forester. Retired Texas Lawman

If you wish to tow more than ~1000 lbs. or go off-roading, 4Runner. For more sedate driving, Highlander.

We faced the same decision in 2008 for my wife. The Highlander had more bells and whistles. The 4Runner rides higher, more ground clearance, and has a much higher resale value down the road. My wife made a wise decision and LOVES her 4Runner.

Just beware, only the SR/5 and Limited trims have the third row in the 4Runner. And even then it’s not great for anyone beyond kids. An adult could ride back there (solo) across town, but that’d be about it. Access to the third row will be better in the Highlander as well, assuming you opt for the 2nd row captains chairs. As mentioned above if you need third row another option is the Lexus GX460. Shares a lot of the attributes with the 4Runner but gets a V8. I looked at both but ended up with a Limited 4Runner because I like the look better (gonna do some mods to make it into a pseudo Off-Road trim) and the resale on 4Runners is insane compared to the GX. Brother and his wife have a GX though and are very happy with it. Success always occurs in private, and failure in full view. Complacency sucks…

We drive a 2021 Highlander Hybrid Platinum. Great ride, lots of options, 37 mpg, trouble free, good fit/finish, comfortable seating, 110 volts in the back to run a small fridge for Costco trips, plenty of power, lots of safety features that work………… and so on. I’d buy another in a heart beat. I'm sorry if I hurt you feelings when I called you stupid - I thought you already knew - Unknown ................................... Easy. If you only see pavement Highlander it is if you see anytime off pavement 4Runner.
Common complaint in MANY Toyotas. I have them on my Tundra. Huge difference. Is that something that changed between the 4th & 5th gen T4R? I've spent a few hours behind the wheel of both of my dad's 4th gens & never had any discomfort. The Enemy's gate is down.

Our Highlander has a tow package and will tow 5k lbs. A Highlander will handle a fair amount of off road conditions as well. Sure the 4Runner is better suited for that. Just like the Highlander will excel doing 75 mph on the highway over the 4Runner. "Practice like you want to play in the game"

Made from a different mold |
4Runner's are made in Japan and the Highlander is made in NA. I own a 2019 4Runner Off Road Pro and it's awesome but I use it for more than just mall crawling. It has enough power to get out of it's own way and not hurt itself (typical Toyota) and gets decent fuel economy (avg is 19.3 over 85K miles). So far only oil changes, filters, tires and wipers. Doesn't have the best turning radius which can be a bit of a pain, especially in a crowded parking lot with impatient people trying to scooch by. My model doesn't have 3rd row seats and I wouldn't use them even if it did. I've seen them though and if you need that functionality, get the Highlander. Earlier last year we had a Highlander hybrid as a rental and that will definitely be our next "road" car. Our beloved 2006 Camry is VERY long in the tooth so maybe within the next year or so. Ride quality of the Highlander is better but I expected that. Fuel economy was great at 36 or something for the 12 days we had it. If a person doesn't need a highly capable off-road vehicle, the Highlander would be the way to go. Good luck making a choice. ___________________________ No thanks, I've already got a penguin.

If you see me running try to keep up |
I've got a 2019 and 2023 4Runner, I like that they were made in Japan. Get 18-19 mpg and hopefully I'll keep them until they won't run anymore.

I had a 2015 Highlander Limited that was running well but wanted some of the newer features so bought a 2023 Highlander Limited AWD. The car was not available with a six cyl. but does well with the 4 cyl. and 8-speed trans. We get an average of 23 mpg combined highway and local. Highway travel includes a lot of the local toll roads at the posted 80 & 85 mph. Did great on last summer's 4,500 mile road trip. My only gripes have been that it took Toyota almost a year to get my 2d key fob and there's an outstanding recall to fix the lower front bumper cover assembly. "Cedat Fortuna Peritis"

I am on my second 4R. This one is a 17 Limited. Previous was a Trail. Both excellent vehicles. The full time 4WD, traction control and suspension of the Limited make it the best vehicle I have ever owned when the road conditions are shall we say, less than ideal. Highly recommended! Redleg, is that recall for a whistling noise that happens at lower (under 50 or so) mph. We have that issue on our 2021. Thanks. "Practice like you want to play in the game"

To all of you who are serving or have served our country, Thank You |
I like my 2023 4runner a lot but I can understand the mileage thing @ 20k per year. I've driven the highlander non Hybrid what I did not like was the 8 speed auto, seems like it shifts to much and sometimes hunts for gears especially so around any hills even small ones. For this reason I would look at a Highlander Hybrid. Since you are looking at 3rd row you may also want to check out the Grand Highlander. https://www.thecarconnection.c...0is%20no%20different.
