Unapologetic Old School Curmudgeon |
We have a new rescue. She will NOT drink from the auto feed water bowl / tank we have for the dogs. Occasionally it will do the "blub blub" noise as it fills the bowl and it freaks her out. She will not drink from it. We put out a bowl and she started to drink from that, but these dogs drink too much and we are always filling the bowl so we want to go back to the water tank type. But this dog is stubborn as hell and refuses to drink from it. I know eventually she will have to , but she has gone over 2 days being stubborn and I don't know at what point they can get kidney problems, so my wife gives in and puts the bowl back out. Can’t you just get a bigger bowl?

Needs a check up from the neck up |
I ran into an issue with a adopted cat. Seems like they hoard water and wont drink unless there are multiple bowls out. We were giving him fresh water daily and he wouldnt drink it. We put 3 bowls out and he immediatly started drinking regularly. Use the bowl, put it closer and closer to the other thing each time.

Multiple water dishes for my cat too. And I have had cats who drank out the crapper, too. Cats are weird. End of Earth: 2 Miles Upper Peninsula: 4 Miles

3° that never cooled |
I don't know, but I would not want to possibly do injury to a canine friend by testing how long it could go without water. It is not much of a chore to fill a water bowl the old fashioned way. We keep water bowls filled in two different rooms for our 80 pound Boxer. He's worth it. NRA Life

That’s what you got out of his post? That he wants to cruelly experiment on his dog that he doesn’t care about as much as you care about yours? Anyway … I like the idea of a second bowl moved closer and closer to the automatic one. Then start putting less and less water in it.

Eye on the Silver Lining |
The question appears to be how long a dog can go without water. They can’t for long, not without deleterious effects. Maximum should be overnight, imho. Or if you’re doing a water consumption study, and these are carefully monitored. Dogs should be allowed water ad lib, I.e. at liberty. That being said, I pull the water dish at night for my dogs and I immediately offer in the a.m. I have a few water dishes available during the day to access. At night they are sleeping, so they shouldn’t typically be drinking. Long story short, I wouldn’t go more than 6-8 hours on any regular basis, and this would be affected by whether it was hot or they’d been playing/exercising, what breed/s of dog, long coat/short, where you live (temp/humidity), the physical health of the pup (good bloodwork, nothing to note). It’s worth talking to your vet about your individual pup and it’s health. I, too, had pups that refused to drink from the same bowls as another, but it sounds like you narrowed down the issue to sound. Are there other auto waterers that operate by a different mechanism? That might be worth looking into. Good luck. Caveat: I’m a vet tech, with a master’s from a veterinary college. __________________________ "Trust, but verify."

On the wrong side of the Mobius strip |
Consider a fountain type of water bowl. We have one from here: https://store.petsafe.net/foun.../stainless-steel?g=s These have a small electric pump, and the water flows constantly. We use it for the kitties, but it is not cat specific.

His diet consists of black coffee, and sarcasm. |
Does this just keep the bowl topped up, or does it swirl the water around? Sometimes animals like to drink from moving water.

Altitude Minimum |
We have a water bowl on the breakfast room and one in the master bathroom for our (2) 80 lb. Boxers. The one in the breakfast room is constantly getting rinsed out and refreshed. Just the way it is. We DO limit their water after exercise until they calm down.

If nothing else, give it wet food. Even watered or put bone broth on dry food

Interesting problem. We have probably the same waterer, a clear plastic bottle with a black lid that you invert and plug in the grey base which has the bowl and the receiver. Went from the one gallon version to the three gallon version to extend the interval. Definitely get the “glug, glug” when the water bubbles go up in it. Do you have other dogs living with the rescue that happily drink from the self filling bowl? Maybe continue to run the self filler and add a separate bowl (that you move closer over time as others have suggested). Perhaps the new pup will learn from the others and relax over time as it settles into its new environment. Good luck with this challenge!

Inject yourself! |
Fresh water twice daily. Moisten the dry food to help keep hydrated. Next, and it’s a potential mess and such, but flavor the water with something. Chicken broth or such seems to help. Different auto waterer style, if only for options and so there are no resource guarding issues. Do not send me to a heaven where there are no dogs. Step Up or Stand Aside: Support the Troops ! I am not trying to experiment on my dog. But this pack of dogs drink a lot of water, and often the bowl may be empty when we aren't home or before we see its empty. The larger tank type holds a lot more water and so they are less likely to empty it before we see it and refill it. I want to get the new dog drinking from it, but I'm not willing to cause health problems while we play the battle of wills. They all drink from the same bowl, but sometimes the bigger ones come through and can drink a ton. It will be better for the new small dog to get used to the bigger tank so then there is less chance of an empty bowl and there is always water available. If I set out a bowl just for her, the big ones will come over and wipe that out first, then go to the normal one and leave her with an empty bowl. I did try moving it ever closer, and eventually it was sitting in the other bowl. She just will not approach it. If its literally touching it next to it, she's fine with that. I can't explain it. Touching it, fine. In it, bad. Using it bad. Crazy hounds... Don't weep for the stupid, or you will be crying all day

Baby steps. Depending on how recent the adoption they are still freaked out and getting accustomed to surroundings This past week I’ve taken in my GF’s fathers yellow lab he is now unable to properly care for. Shes never really been a dog. Never had to negotiate stairs. After day 3 (look up the rule of 3’s adopting) she started to come out of her shell. Just today has gone down the stairs twice (still have to put her in the cargo elevator to come back up) In a few days she’s going to be a passenger with the GF and drive cross country to her forever home. If our retired friends didn’t fit her perfectly, we’d keep her ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Live today as if it may be your last and learn today as if you will live forever

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should |
We solved a similar problem by getting a two bowl stand with large bowls. They also help by keeping the bowls from being pushed around, especially as they get close to empty and lighter. Unless we aren't paying attention, we never run them both dry. I normally change the water daily just so it's fresh and no old food particles in there. https://www.chewy.com/frisco-m...less-steel/dp/338280 ___________________________ Avoid buying ChiCom/CCP products whenever possible.
