I just got a brand new puppy, a standard poodle. This was an incredibly exciting thing, it was like we were preparing for a baby or something. Buying stuff, changing things up in the house etc etc.

We got him last Friday 8-9 days ago and he is awesome, just a friendly, crazy dog. He loves playing in the snow and sleeping in the bed with us. Everything is a toy to him except his toys.

Anyways a few nights ago, he was ripping around the house and he jumped up on an old futon, his leg slipped between the frame as he fell off the couch. The result is a broken leg.

I feel absolutely horrible and helpless, we flew him to Anchorage to get him to an emergency vet where they x-ray’d him and while the break is good as far as breaks go, it’s broken. They casted him up.

There is a lot to be thankful for but at the same time, whenever I realize he’s going to miss 4-5 weeks of playing it breaks my heart. We have to fly him back to anchorage 4 times to get re-casted since he is growing. I do t care about the costs associated with this, I just am so sad for my buddy.

If you could send positive vibes to pumpkin the poodle I would be grateful.

Thank you.

Will do. Dogs are danged resilient and adapt to disability very well.

Just keep him calm during the healing process and he should heal fully.

And you will, too. Smile

Prayers for you and the pup. It's painful for us when they are in pain too. He should mend quickly.

Prayers sent. My GSD broke his leg. I have no idea how he did it but when I came home from work he was limping. The vet put him in a cast. Advised me that he would be fine in 14 days or so. I questioned this and he advised most bones heal well enough in two weeks and when your dog has had enough it will tear the cast off. Sure enough 14 days later I came home and the cast was destroyed and he was fine. Hope it works out the same way for your pup.

Sounds like a little impromptu crate training, my puppies undergo a couple weeks of 80% of time in their crate and it's always produced positive results. With love they don't care if they are kept in a purse. The pup will be fine. Accidents happen like anything else.

Prayers for your pup sent. I had a young dog break her leg, not once but twice (bad genes combined with a husband that just didn’t believe she’d do it again-she had a thing about jumping stairs). First time she was casted, second time I quit fucking around and plated it.
Time will pass more quickly than you think. Be strong. Don’t deviate from the instructions given, and remember these words:
The bone will heal to its level of responsibility.

Newmexican,

I just read your account of Pumpkin's accident and your agony in suffering for him. I know this agony well, and I also know the power of prayer. I have prayed the LORD will give Pumpkin's vet great skill and a heart for him and you, and also that He will give you peace, comfort, grace, and strength as you trust in Him.

Merry Christmas to you and your family, and Pumpkin too!

Hoping for a full recovery for the pup. We have a very active Border Collie/Standard Poodle mix and she's crazy just like yours. She's almost 10 months and the other day jumped on the kitchen island, has jumped completely over my wife sitting on the couch.

Not a pup, but one of my outdoor cats was found one morning with a broken leg. I had it x-rayed and set and was told to keep her in a crate for 3 weeks. She got out of the crate in a week and spent some time under my stairs until she got outside again. She recovered fully, even with not following the doctor's rules.

I'm certain your pup will also be fine. Be calm and cuddle your pup.

As you probably know, everything in a dogs life runs at hypersonic speed. Puppy to dog in a year, 62 days to pump out a litter, and so on. They heal so much faster than us. Your pup will be back to full speed fast.
